Sinton eliminated after 1-0, 13-inning heartbreaker

SINTON — After Sinton and Boerne combined for 17 runs in game one of their series Thursday night, goose eggs were the norm in game two at Aviator Field on Saturday night.

Sinton’s Shane Segovia and Boerne’s Ross Kennell tossed 12 innings of shutout baseball, before the Greyhounds finally put the game away late.

Boerne used a Sinton error to score the game’s only run as they eliminated the Pirates 1-0 in 13 innings. Dalton D’Spain opened the inning with a walk off Pirate relief pitcher Trey Gallegos. D’Spain moved to second when Dylan Boss singled. Chad Long then grounded to short, Boss was thrown out at second, but the relay throw to first was wild, allowing D’Spain to score the game-winning run.

Segovia finished with 13 strikeouts and scattered nine hits while Kennell finished with 14 strikeouts and held the Pirates to just three hits, two by Ramsey Rivera for the Pirates. Kennell, who gave way to Chad Marek in the 13th, threw 166 pitches, 123 for strikes while Segovia finished the night with 158 pitches.

The Pirates got the first chance to get on the board in the first, with one out Rivera singled and stole second base and moved to third on the throwing error. Shane Segovia then drew a walk and stole second, but Greyhound pitcher Ross Kennell stuck out Carson Cave and got Ram Espinoza to ground out.

The Pirates missed another opportunity in the third, Gallegos reached second on a throwing error to lead-off the frame and after Kennell struck out Segovia, Cave drew a walk, but Ram Espinoza flew out to right for the final out.

Meanwhile Segovia did not allow a Boerne base runner to reach second until the fifth when Pierce Fly, who finished with three hits, doubled before Segovia picked up a strikeout to end the inning.

In the eighth inning Rivera picked up his second hit and moved to second after Segovia drew a free pass, but Kennell struck out Cave to end the frame.

Boerne missed a chance to get on the board in the top of the 10th off Segovia. With one out Pierce Fly singled and moved to second on a wild pitch. Segovia got the next batter on a ground ball, but back to back singles by Barrett Nipp and Garret Tully loaded the bases. Dalton D’Spain then grounded to Sinton Rivera at shortstop, who dove for the ball and threw out D’Spain at first to end the threat.

The Greyhounds again threatened in the 11th, Dylan Boss opened the frame with a single and two outs later Michael Stockton reached on an infield hit, but Segovia got Fly looking for the third out.
