BY Javier Becerra of the CC Caller Times:

ROBSTOWN — At more than 200 miles, the drive from Robstown to Fredericksburg takes more than three hours.

The Cotton Pickers didn’t make the trip home very much fun for the Battlin’ Billies.

Robstown escaped with a 5-4 victory in Game 1 of a best-of-three Class 3A area matchup Thursday night. The Cotton Pickers (22-7 overall) lead the series 1-0 heading into tonight’s second game at Fredericksburg (19-11), with a third scheduled for Saturday back in the hill country if necessary.

With the scored tied 4-4, Randy Flores walked to lead off the bottom of the seventh inning and beat the throw to second on a sacrifice bunt by Alex Marroquin. Two batters later, Mike Velasquez hit a one-out grounder to shortstop that the Billies turned into a force out at second.

Fredericksburg’s Dillon Reeh threw to first to complete the double play, but Velasquez managed to reach safely. An alert Flores rounded third and took off for home, arriving at the plate moments before the ball.

Fredericksburg pitcher Ryan Flores made a statement on the second pitch of the night, a high fastball that Flores clobbered over the left-field fence. The blast put the Billies in front 1-0, but Robstown starter Randy Flores didn’t let Fredericksburg build any momentum.

A left-hander, Robstown’s Flores responded to the home run by striking out the next three batters. He needed only 13 pitches to retire the side, quite a recovery considering how the game opened.

The Cotton Pickers took over from there.

Robstown took the lead for good in the bottom of the first inning, which Brandon Garza led off with a walk. Flores followed with a triple to left-center that scored Garza and forged a 1-1 tie.

A wild pitch allowed Flores to score easily from third, giving the Cotton Pickers a 2-1 advantage. The cushion increased to two runs in the bottom of the second on an RBI single by John Ramirez that drove in Ricky Gonzales.

Fredericksburg cut the lead to 3-2 in the top of the fifth when Clay Gentle scored on consecutive throwing errors after reaching safely on an infield single. He took second on a passed ball and went to third when the throw sailed into center field, but the play didn’t end there.

The throw from center to third ended in the bleachers, prompting Gentle to race home and bring the Billies to within a run.

Robstown 5, Fredericksburg 4

Fredericksburg 100 012 0—4 5 1

Robstown 210 010 1—5 4 2

WP — Trey Leal (5-1). LP — Ryan Flores (7-5). 3B — Robstown, Randy Flores. HR — Fredericksburg, Ryan Flores. Records — Fredericksburg 19-11 overall, Robstown 22-7.

5-0 after 6 and the final was 17-0?

Who scored the TD for Robstown in the 7th?

Actually it was two touchdowns but we missed both extra points.

Robstown plated 12 in the top of the 7th. Fredericksburg ran out of arms and it got ugly.

Velasquez another shutout? Doesn't surprise me. This kid has a lot of talent.

Velasquez is coming off an injury and may have been on a pitch count. He was pulled after 5 innings with by my unofficial count of 10 strikeouts, 2 walks, and 2 hits allowed.

JR Trey Leal closed it out with 2 innings, 5 strikeouts and no hits allowed.

Again all stats are unofficial.

Sounds like both pitchers did well. How's the team handling everything since Castro's departure?

He has not left yet and it is my personal opinion that a majority of the team is doing everything they can to send Coach Castro out on a high note.
