I hate the burden this puts on a school when this happens this late. IMO unless there is a great candidate from within, the school is left at a huge disadvantage. Other possible candidates have already been lured away or have decided to not test the waters until next season.

Yep, makes the potential recruits rethink their commitments. ;)

If there is anyone qualified on current staff, they would be smart choice.

Just hope any new coach keeps the rest of the coaching staff. It will make it tough for the current coaches to find work this late plus an all new staff is going to make it even more tough on the players for the upcoming season.

This is one of the top 10-20 3A jobs in the state I would have to say. they have for years had great tradition and athletes and the people love football in Vernon.

Well..... I have to disagree.
If it's that great then why would Hall leave?

People support the team, but facility wise I would say there are better schools out there. Talent wise, the Lions have been down the past few years. Is Vernon the next Commerce?

It's not the job it once was....dont think Vernon will go the Commerce route but they dont have the kids they used to have up there.....

Commerce and Atlanta are examples of once proud programs that have really gone downhill.....what about Marlin?? 1-9 in 2A last year...wow

From what I hear is that Hall left so that he could be close to his daughter who is now in the metroplex area.

I have heard these names from several different sources as well as being posted on another football board. I can't confirm if they are legit or just rumors.

BATEMAN - VERNON
MANLEY - OLD HIGH
PONDER - RIDER
FAMBROUGH - FORMER BRECK HC
PEARCE - LONGVIEW
BRUNSON - CISCO

They have an awesome tailback for the next three years. Devin Butler, 195 pound tailback who had 1000+ yards rushing as a freshman last year behind a bad line. His father, Dexter Butler, was the 250 tailback who had 288 yards rushing vs, Southlake in the famous 39-35 Vernon loss at Pennington Field. And by the way, Dexter was the district champion in the 100 meters as a junior (At 235lbs) and got 5th in the shot put.

I have asked this before but maybe there are some new posters. Back in 1972 Vernon had a running back that won the 100 and threw the shot at state. I don;t think it was a Butler but does any one know?

All I remember was that they would run the I formation with this kid in the fullback position and run an isolation on the middle linebacker (me). It was pretty scary seeing this 200+ pound guy getting a running start at you and you had to go through him to get to the ball carrier. I don't know how many yards they got on that play that night but I know my butt got knocked back over a hundred for the game.

My take:

Coach Hall's daughters graduated from Vernon so he did not have kids in school here any longer. I suspected that he would leave when that happened (He stayed two extra years). Coach Hall may have thought he had done pretty well here over the years and was ready for a change. He was head coach for 7 years and spent 12 years total in Vernon. During his head coaching tenure Coach Hall led the team to two state semifinal appearances (2003 and 2006) and a state quarterfinal appearance (2007). The Lions had a record of 48-37 under Coach Hall and made the playoffs in five of his seven seasons.

Vernon always has the athletes, but has lacked size particularly on the line. One reason for the wing t offense that we run. Like many small towns the Vernon fans expect winners here and the town supports the football team.

Not much to do in Vernon, it’s about 11,000 people and we just lost a TYC facility that employed over 300 people (It closed today). It is an hour away from Wichita Falls which is over 100,000. It is cheap to live here as the housing prices are rock bottom. A $150,000 home gets you the very upscale neighborhoods here.

Very rural with lots of agriculture. We have a junior college (they don’t play football). The largest employer is a state hospital followed by a Tyson packing plant and then the city and school district.

I spent 15 years in Vernon and enjoyed my stay. I call Vernon my hometown even though I was raised in Arlington. The people are friendly and you can't go to Wal-Mart without stopping to talk to people you know.

Ok there you have it~

Of those who applied for the position, one is currently on the Vernon coaching staff, and one is a former vernon resident; however no former vernon coaches applied for the job.we have resumes from class A to 5A coaches and some have coached at the junior college level, we received some good quality applications, several have past or present AD experience. and others have a good solid background at the coordinator level Vernon Daily Record

Tie vote amongst board members for picking the next head coach. It's down to Mark Bateman (current Vernon OC) and Andy Correll (current Portales, NM head coach)
