This will be the 1st time that I have missed the state meet in about 10 years. I wish I could have made it happen.

Boys
Estacado is bringing athletes in 8 events as is LE. There is one other team that is bringing quite a few. I like LEs chances if they get quality point in the 3 relays.

Girls
LE repeats. Lot of Freshmen and Sophs stepped up and this team is stronger than last year. I believe they have 9 qualifiers, competeing in 7 events.

If you have never been to the state meet, I recommend. It is a fantastic event and you occasionally get a chance to see some world class athletes.

Has anybody heard anything about the discus thrower from Navasota. I hear he throws over 200, but in meets he is usually around the 180's.

Loved to go back when it was at Memorial Stadium, only go now if I've got kids running. Not this year!

I think one of the Navasota poster posted a link to an article about him a few weeks ago.

I posted this a few weeks ago before the district track meet. Just as a thought, this young man is capable of 200 feet, but his regional toss was what UIL has posted. He really won it on the first toss and just went through the motions after that.

The following article is from the Navasota Examiner.

Navasota’s Brown launches the state’s best discus throw

BY SCOTT MCDONALD, Examiner publisher
Published:

Navasota junior Rodney Brown had no idea that the eyes of Texas discus throwers were on him when the news broke to him last week

“My throw is the best in the state?” he asked. With his throw of 198-feet, 7.5 inches last week in Willis, Brown emerged as a frontrunner for a state title.

“I think it’s amazing now that I know,” he said.

Brown had an amazing day throwing the discus. Try this for size:

• His nearest competitor threw it 147 feet (51 feet behind Brown).

• His throw was 31 feet better than his personal and school record.

• All his throws were over 185 feet.

So going into his this throw, his coach challenged him.

“I had already thrown my personal best, so my coach told me to go out and try to get 200,” Brown said.

To put it in perspective, his throw last week is 12 feet farther than the throw that won the Class 3A state title last spring. In fact, his throw of 198-07 would have won the state title last year in every class but 5A, where it would have finished second.

Brown went to state last year and placed sixth with a throw of 158-04. The Class 3A winner last year was Whitesboro’s Hayden Baillio with a throw of 186-01.

Brown accredits his big throws to technique and practice. Then again, he finished fourth in the state in Powerlifting this year.

“You can see that you need strength, too,” said Patrick Goodman, the powerlifting coach and an assistant track coach.

Brown said he throws the discus about 25-30 times in practice. After that he throws the shot put. Then he works out with the football team, and then he hits the weight room.

He plays on the offensive and defensive line in football, but said he would like to be on the LSU track and field team.

Brown has hopes of making it back to state in the discus, but not just for a free trip to Austin.

“I want to win state this year,” Brown said. “I want to throw 200 and win state. That’s my goal.”

A good thing for Navasota — he’s still got another year on the Rattlers track team.

This is a great kid that participates in all sports and volunteers in many community events. It is inspiring to see that he is being successful.

William Markert from Yoakum is one of those physical freaks that is fun to watch. I mean that in the best way possible. Great kid.

He throws the discus around 180 feet. Discus 59 feet. 110 meter high hurdles has been around 14.5. 300 meter hurdles low 39's. High jump a PR of 6'-8". Oh yeah, and he can pole vault too. His dad is the pole vault coach. He has not done it in competition because he is in other events. 6'-4" and about 190 lbs. Several colleges looking at him as a decathlete with A&M leading the way.

Been watching him since he was a little kid doing AAU summer track in San Antonio years ago. He's really built for the multi-events.
