That is an epic comeback.

I don't see how a team could lose one like this and come back to take the next two. This game might be over but it has to be already a heart-breaker.
Mathis is in BIG trouble.

CORPUS CHRISTI — KINGSVILLE -- Nine-run leads are difficult to manufacture. They are even more difficult to lose.

Mathis High School managed to do both Thursday night in the opening round of the Class 3A baseball playoffs.

The Pirates staked themselves to a six-run lead after one inning, padded it to nine after five innings and wound up losing by a baker's dozen. Pending your loyalties, it was an incredible display of resiliency on the part of Zapata or total implosion by the Pirates, who tumbled 22-9 in Game 1 of a Class 3A best-of-3 series at Nolan Ryan Field Thursday night.

The series resumes at 2 p.m. Saturday, also at Nolan Ryan Field, with a third game to follow immediately after Game 2, if necessary.

The 17-8 Hawks went from nearly being run-ruled to pulling off an unthinkable comeback 3 hours and 32 minutes after the ballgame started. They sent 32 batters to the plate during the sixth and seventh innings, scoring all of their runs in that span.

To commit all of the offensive surges and defensive miscues could cost the life of a small tree. Suffice to say, the 21-7-2 Pirates let one out of its grasp and the Hawks forcefully took it.

In the sixth, the Hawks pulled within 9-7 off Mathis reliever Seth Wieland (6-2). Run-scoring hits from Manuel Salinas, Rogelio Campos, Jorge Garcia and Mike Rivera and a two-run single from Jerry Gutierrez brought Zapata within reach.

The Hawks sent 21 batters to the plate in the seventh, scoring 15 times on nine hits and three Mathis errors.

The way Mathis starter Anthony Banda was throwing the early, it appeared he wasn't going to need much offensive assistance to turn aside Zapata. The left-handed Banda (7-1) struck out nine and walked three for the District 31-3A third-place team. Only six Hawks (16-9) had reached base until Mathis faltered in the sixth when Zapata scored seven runs on five hits off Banda and Wieland.

Banda carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning before No. 9 hitter Garcia broke up the no-no with a sharp single to left field. Garcia finished with four RBI.

Zapata 21, Mathis 9

Zapata 000 007 (15)--22 15 3

Mathis 600 120 0---9 8 6

Oscar Flores, Louie Gonzalez (1) and Mike Rivera. Anthony Banda (6-1), Seth Wieland (6), Derrick Dominguez (7) and Dominguez, Wieland. W -- Gonzalez. L -- Wieland (6-2). Records -- Zapata 17-8, Mathis 21-7-2.

Highlights -- Zapata, Manuel Salinas RBI; Rogelio Campos RBI; Jorge Garcia 3-4, 3RBI; Jerry Gutierrez 4-6, 3B, 5RBI; Mike Rivera RBI; Robert Bustamante 2-4, 2-run 2B, 3RBI. Mathis, Banda 9Ks, 2-4, 2RBI; Wieland 2-3, 2RBI; Gabriel Alvarado RBI; Joe Alvarado RBI; Cody Thomas 2RBI.

Pearsall has the winner of this series. Don't quite know how to gauge a game like this? Wow, that's just crazy.

TOSS UP!

60 yards of that was one play...and to be fair it was 97 yards on 4 plays.;)

I still say puking a 7-spot is worse, but such is the nature of baseball, being an untimed sport and all.
