Stangs overcome heatto nip WF in scrimmage

WICHITA FALLS -- The competition, not to mention the heat, was a lot stiffer for Sweetwater in Saturday's final preseason scrimmage.

But the Mustangs still more than held their own in both cases.

Playing in near 100-degree heat on the artifi-cial turf surface at Memorial Stadium, Sweetwa-ter managed a 3-2 touchdown edge against Class 4A Wichita Falls in its final tuneup for this Friday's season opener at Vernon.

The teams fought to a 2-2 draw during the controlled portion of the scrimmage, in which Sweetwater had 230 yards on 32 snaps to 274 yards for the Coyotes, who finished 8-3 last season and won the District 5-4A championship. But the Mustangs were the only team to score a touchdown after play switched to a "live" quarter to end the scrimmage.

Michael Straley intercepted a Coyote pass that was tipped by Giles Montgomery and returned it to Wichita Falls' 2-yard line, where Justin Clow-ers scored on the next play. Wichita Falls later drove to the Mustang 8, but Sweetwater was able to regain possession after holding on downs.

Sweetwater had perfect offensive balance in the controlled scrimmage, gaining 115 yards on the ground and in the air, and also had one TD each way. Jacinto Rosas scored on a 15-yard run following quarterback Reid Bishop's 45-yard toss to Montgomery, and Michael Williams also caught a 45-yard scoring pass from No. 2 quar-terback Jeremy Thompson.

Bishop finished 4-of-6 passing for 70 yards, while Thompson completed his only attempt and also ran for a team-high 26 yards. Rosas ran for 25 yards and Alan Copeland 24.

"It was unbearably hot," said head coach Kent Jackson. "But I thought we held up real well. The kids really made us proud today. We learned some things. It was a great challenge for us."

Sweetwater's JV and freshman teams each scored once in their scrimmages. Isaac Franco had a 35-yard TD run in the JV skirmish, while Jonathan Lomas had a scoring run for the fresh-man squad. By RON HOWELL
