View Full Version : Worst Stretch of Hwy in Texas??

What are some of the worst stretches of roads in the state?? Saw this on another board and its an interesting topic.

My list

Hwy 287 from Wichita Falls to Amarillo: long and boring, you have to slow down to 30mph every ten miles to prevent getting a speeding ticket from Barney Fife the local PD

I-20 from Monahans to I-10: at least you can go 80 but there's nothing to see, hardly anywhere to stop and downright depressing. At least when you get to I-10 you start to see mountains.

Hwy 21 from Alto to Nacogdoches: don't recommend driving this at night, dark and winding road...one lane...very scary

I37 from San Antonio to Corpus: straight flat and nothing...two hours of absolute utter boredom

Hwy 29 from Georgetown to Burnet - there are about 487 police officers/deputies/DPS in that 36 miles.

All city streets in Houston. They may be concrete, but nobody here knows how to make it smooth. Harrisburg from 225 to downtown is the worst road anywhere.

Ranch Rd 32 and 12 between Blanco and San Marcos, beautiful during the day but dangerous as hell at night.

RR 12....the Devils Backbone. I agree, very spectacular during the day, but would not ride a motorcycle on that stretch at night.

Have not driven Hwy 21 but you have the rest pegged. I think the 287 route would rate #1. Lots of nothing, till you get to more of nothing!

Highway 59 from Freer to Laredo. 62 miles without a turn, or at least it seems that way. Very straight and very boring.

Loop 1604 around San Antonio from US 87 to Somerset. About 32 miles. Two lanes. Lots of old folks in 1972 pickups and old John Deere tractors that will not pull over in the grass. I think that 32 miles takes about 14 hours. It sure seems that way to me.

I don't know what critera you are using for worst stretch of roads, but US 380 between Bridgeport, Decatur, and Denton used to be one of the most dangerous stretches of road anywhere before they made 380 a four lane divided highway between Bridgeport and Decatur.

Between Denton and Decatur is still a very dangerous stretch though.

By using the other critera... 114 between Seymour and Lubbock is terrible... Personal experience, hit a deer near Guthrie, not fun

Lots of long barren stretches in Texas but none of them is worse than from Salt Lake City to Henderson NV across the Great Salt Lake. Not even a blade of grass and the only tree is a forty foot metal one soneone built years ago.

I havent been that far, but I did make a drive from Cameron to Orem Utah and all the from west texas into colorado through NM was the most boring drive ever. Once we got in to CO tho there was snow on the ground and then going through the mountains in Utah was pretty cool seeing the signs that said something like helicopter patrol or something like that and watch for falling boulders with huge rocks laying only feet to the side of the road haha and next fuel station 80 miles lol something ive never seen before. Id love to go back tho

And also, Hwy 21 from Bastrop to San Marcos...that is the worst part of the drive back to my apt ever. Its only about 45 miles, but theres no shoulder and people drive about 45 mph and now theres road construction about every 10 miles

I agree about the Hwy 29 bit, especially thru Bertram. There are about 1200 citizens and they have THREE miles of city limits (SPEED TRAP). During the weekends they use "volunteer" officers trying to build up their OJT hours. I live a mile or so west of the city limits and on the weekends it is solid sirens up 29 and back again.......chasing victims up to 4 miles beyond their limits!

It does give the coyotes something to howl at..................

I am not sure what this thread is about. Boring,Hectic or Traffic. The past couple of years, I have spent most of my time in Los Angeles. I have spent many hours and driven thru most of TX. If you want to talk about traffic, nothing compares to LA. If you want to talk about borning streaches of HWY, then Tx wins. I will take the boring Tx roads any day! L.A. sux!

One, it's about 50 miles longer to go that way and two, 380 is under construction between Greenville and McKinney and in McKinney it's a traffic nightmare.

If you go from Sherman to Greenville the best way is to take Hwy. 11 to Whitewright and pick up 69 down. But either way you're not saving any time from 82.

82's not that bad as long as you keep it close to the speed limit and watch for the smokey bears. The new bypass around Clarksville helped a lot.

Of you want to talk deadly, sh 105 from Navasota to Montgomery claims a lot of lives every year. I can agree with 21 as being just a plain bad road from start to finish.

not one of the most dangerous but one of the stretches i hate to be stuck in is 281 between 410 and bulverde. 6 lanes with stop lights every 1/2 mile and they are NEVER green.

and 35W from Ft Worth all the way to Austin.

I once ended up having to pull a very large U-Haul through LA during rush hour. Was traveling the middle lane because I didn't know which way I'd have to exit and got pulled over. The trooper said that since I was from Texas I probably didn't know that when pulling a trailer you have to stay in the outside lane. Don't know how far I had to go to find a place to pull over. Just glad I lived to tell about it later.:D :D

i think its 75. i also think they added passing lanes every few miles.

i've traveled the state a few times, but the one place i seem to see the most cops is a stretch of highway 77 from around odem to the checkpoint. it's terrible.

Most dangerous road: Hwy 16 between Kerrville and Medina, more curves than a snake could make in a life time.

Longest road that isn't: 377 from Brownwood to Brady and Mason to Junction, Seems like it takes forever to drive, but both of those segments of road are less than 50 miles each.

Most poorly maintained road: pick any road in Louisianna.

29 from Burnet to Llano (at least) is pretty bad. 2-lanes, double striped, with 3" shoulders, the majority of the way. It never fails that I get behind some poke driving 5 mph under the speed limit. Then if I ever have to go North to Brady from there, it's another 50 +/- miles of the same.

Love that road. My wife wanted to ride motorcycles with us one weekend. I told her if she could ride Hwy 16 to Medina then she could ride the rest of the weekend. Before then she had only ridden a dirt bike a few times. She did the ride to Medina and rode the rest of the weekend with us. Love that area.
