On average what are high school referees and umpires paid per game?

Would higher pay improve the quality of officiating?

I havent called any games this year, but last year it was $45 a game plus mileage but I dont believe being paid anymore will increase the performance of any official...if they know what they are doing, they will do the best that they can. They know that if they do really really good the incentives that come playoff time...

and I say this assuming that most referees and umpires want to be calling the big games and trying to move up as much as possible

I asked the questions because I really did not know. Based on your answer I assume pay scales for playoff games are considerably much higher. Thank you.

I wouldn't say its much much higher, but just the way I see it, once you start getting playoff games you start realizing that you have made it gaining the respect not only of your superiors on your own board, but of the coaches requesting you to do a series...I think that is more important than the pay...to me personally at least

I hope most officials feel this way. My gut feeling is that they do.
Good post.

what that tells you is, if you travel to another teams place and they use a different chapter, that those umps will do whatever to make sure they get that playoff game...
close calls always, and I mean always, go there way...

that is what it means

I highly highly doubt that...all it takes is one phone call from anyone telling your board that you seemed to be biased in some game situation and you will immediately be getting a call. If this is what you think goes on, you are mistaken. And say some school not in your chapter does like you and maybe a call did go there way, the other school must approve of the official as well...its not like your going to hand pick your officials and they will ensure you a cakewalk to the next round, and any official who takes part in anything like this i can assure you that they will not have any more playoff games for QUITE some time...chapters dont put up with that kind of stuff. You would be lucky to be doing varsity games if this kind of thing were to happen. I'm not going to sit here and say this has never happened because im sure it has, but this is the kind of thing that keeps certain chapters from getting playoff games in the future. Every chapter wants to get the most playoff games and have the state games so if there is someone in the chapter taking part in this sort of action I can assure you that things will be taking care of immediately

If a coach does wish to file a formal complaint who would he file that with? I am asking out of curuosity. This is an area I have never known much about.

Also, would you rather have 1 playoff series with some out of chapter team because you screwed a team within your chapter and have that team scratch you as an official for the rest of your career or just play it right? I mean the risk greatly outweighs the advantage...nobody wants to work with the guy that keeps getting scratched by teams

this year and in past: a sliding gate fee schedule starting at $45 a game, going up $5 for every $150 increasing at gate, starting at $150. So, $80 for a $2,000 gate, then $20 for every $1,000 increase.

next year the sliding gate fee goes away.

starting in 2011:
$60 - varsity
$45 - JV

He would most likely call the UIL which would in turn call your chapter president and I can guess that sometime in the near future you would be having a sit down with that president concerning your future with that chapter...this is not taken very lightly

Last question first ---NO!!! What we do for schools could never be compensated sufficiently to be full time employment. It is a part time activity (although many , not all, of us make about $1 an hour when you consider all that we do for what we make) I guess if we could pay guys for attending extra training and clinics the overall quality would improve but just paying more in game fees will not do it.

Football officials for varsity games are paid on the basis of the gate take. The more fans and money brought in at the gate, the higher the ref's fees. Last season I worked mainly 5A games in the San Antonio area and averaged about $100 per game.

GROSS GATE RECEIPTS AND REF FEES
Up to $150 $45
$150 to $250 $50
$250 to $500 $55
$500 to $1,000 $60
$1,000 to $2,000 $65
$2,000 to $3,000 $70
$3,000 to $4,000 $75
$4,000 to $5,000 $80
$5,000 to $7,500 $85
$7,500 to $10,000 $90
$10,000 to $12,500 $95
$12,500 to $15,000 $100
$15,00 to $17,500 $115
$17,500 to $20,500 *$125
* for each additional $5,000 above $20,500 add $20 to fee.

* for each additional $5,000 above $20,500 add $20 to fee.

Subvarsity fees are fixed and based on length of the quarters:
12-minute Quarters $45 per game
9/10-minute Quarters $40 per game
7/8-minute Quarters $30 per game
8-minute Running/6-minute Quarters $25 per game

Referees should get $200 per game!

I did not have a clue what game officials were paid when I started this thread. From the info posted here I would say officials are very much underpaid.

Also the dedication expressed by the refs and umps who posted here is very much appreciated by this fan.

No, they normally get 2K; but if we win it's 10K!:D

P.S. Why are you asking? You already know they are taken care of!:D

speaking softball :: actually the pay scale for playoff games is exactly the same as for regular season games ... where the umpire will get more is the increased gate share (see TexMike's post) ... that is IF the school pays correctly, and many do not. schools are supposed to pay per the pay scale even on regular season games, but some don't. I've worked regular season games in which it was SRO and received only the base rate.

Coaches,
Interested to know how many of you split crews in play-off games and how many of you opt for a neutral chapter?

Pay is set by the UIL and seems to be very controversial.
