CORPUS CHRISTI — Longtime Robstown High School baseball coach Steve Castro has been suspended without pay as the district investigates whether University Interscholastic League rules were violated.

Castro said he was notified Tuesday that he was suspended indefinitely as a coach as was his coaching pay, but he remains on staff as a physical education teacher.

Robstown Independent School District Athletic Director Doug Wood said Wednesday he could not comment because it is a personnel matter, but the district was preparing documents that would be submitted to district and state University Interscholastic League officials.

Ed Stidham, a UIL compliance officer, said he has received no information on the matter.

Castro said he thinks the crux of the issues likely was a directive the school issued him in January about an unapproved baseball supporters organization.

Castro said a group of parents wanted to help raise money for improvements and upgrades at Cotton Picker Field through fundraisers and barbecues.

Castro said Wood told him he needed administration approval for the group, Castro said. A fall baseball league, which had been playing games for the past three years, also didn’t have the district’s approval. Both efforts were ended, Castro said.

Castro also said that Wood informed him there had been reports of unauthorized personnel on the baseball field during workouts.

“There are ex-players that come by and say hi, talk to me, things like that. I don’t see anything wrong with that. What’s wrong with that?” Castro said, adding that Wood told him to instruct those people to stay away.

All three of those issues were included in the January directive.

Castro, 61, has been in Robstown as a coach for 35 years, serving as the head baseball coach since 1983. The team won state championships in 1991 and 1992. He said he plans to consult with a lawyer.

“I’m trying to look at it in a positive way that, hey, I’ve been here quite a few years,” Castro said. “I’ve accomplished just about everything a coach would like to accomplish and we’re coming down the road to where it’s time to retire. I just hate for it to end like this but that’s the way it goes.”

Sinton scored 10 runs in the first 2 innings and nothing after that. Defense will have to finish off innings as that has been a problem so far this year.
