Been there, done that.... Pittsburg 1980 (with 12 shutouts) and Southlake Carroll 1992 (with the current 3A scoring record of 803 points) were both pretty amazing and would be #2 and #3 on my list

Because of a juggernaut run of 8 years of offense that 3A football has never seen before...............but alas, that is also the reason we don't have more:thinking:

Except for that 112-5-1 record Southlake Carroll had during THEIR 8 year tenure in 3A from 1986-1993 and those 803 points Southlake Carroll scored in 1992 while allowing only 122, beating their Quarterfinal, Semifinal and State Final opponents a combined 172-7 back when the 3A playoffs only had one division

The 1966 Sweeny team was pretty salty, only allowing 46 points and no more than 14 in any one game. That team had a couple of NFL'ers including Elmo Wright. Jim Lindsey was the QB and he played in Canada.

The 1979 Van team was pretty salty scoring 371 points and giving up 76. That is 5 points per game with 8 shutouts in 15 games played. That is the 3rd best points allowing since 1979. With #1 being 1983 DF, #2 1980 Pitt & then #3 1979 Van. BTW, I've had a former player tell me Pitt might have won in 1979 if not for Van beating them 7-6.

when did defense and only defense decide the greatness of teams?

If a team can win 22-0 or 56-34 both are dominating wins one with defense, one with offensem but both easy wins

Gilmer has had some great teams but to me to be considered one of the greatest teams ever you have to be GREAT on O and D. Great offenses don't alway score 40+ points if they are a ball controll offense. I understand if you score quickly the other team has more chances to score but great defenses don't give up 30+ points a game.

92 SLC IMO is first followed by D field

for me

1983 Daingerfield
1980 Pittsburg
1992 SLC
2001 Everman

2002 Everman might have been better but they lost a game. I also think the 1992 Vernon team that lost to Southlake in that classic might be the 5th or 6th best team ever....

I think it's been posted above already by others but there are teams who have had BOTH great offense and great defense. Celina '05 in 2A is a great recent example, but Big Sandy '75 would win hands down all-time, even over Daingerfield '83

State Champs Compared

Here are the 384 teams that have had some claim to an 11-man football title in all classifications from 1920-2009, including teams that eventually had to forfeit titles as well as Fort Worth Masonic Home who tied Corsicana in the state title game in 1932 but wasn't officially a co-champ due to losing on penetrations.

The first set of columns is State Championship teams ranked by Highest Average Points Scored per game
The middle set of columns is State Championship teams ranked by Fewest Average Points Allowed per game
The last set of columns is State Championship teams ranked by Highest Average Margin of Victory per game
