gone for good- the shins

(more than one line but I do not care.)

You want to jump and dance
But you sat on your hands
And lost your only chance

Go back to your hometown
Get your feet on the ground
And stop floating around

I find a fatal flaw
In the logic of love
And go out of my head

You love a sinking stone
That'll never elope
So get used to used to the lonesome
Girl, you must atone some

Blue October
"Hate Me"

I think I have a disease. Don't know who gave it to me or when, but I get this burning sensation in my cerebral cortex when stupid and/or ridiculous lyrics are heard. Which is why I have a hard time listening to Limp Bizkit and Toby Keith.

That single line was what made me go from being completely indifferent towards Blue October to paying attention to them and actually enjoying them. One the better lyrical bands out today (maybe even the best, though I love Incubus).

"Hallelujah"
Leonard Cohen

Now I've heard there was a secret chord
That David played, and it pleased the Lord
But you don't really care for music, do you?
It goes like this
The fourth, the fifth
The minor fall, the major lift
The baffled king composing Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah

Your faith was strong but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew you
She tied you
To a kitchen chair
She broke your throne, and she cut your hair
And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah

Baby I have been here before
I know this room, I've walked this floor
I used to live alone before I knew you.
I've seen your flag on the marble arch
Love is not a victory march
It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

There was a time you let me know
What's really going on below
But now you never show it to me, do you?
And remember when I moved in you
The holy dove was moving too
And every breath we drew was Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

You say I took the name in vain
I don't even know the name
But if I did, well really, what's it to you?
There's a blaze of light
In every word
It doesn't matter which you heard
The holy or the broken Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

I did my best, it wasn't much
I couldn't feel, so I tried to touch
I've told the truth, I didn't come to fool you
And even though
It all went wrong
I'll stand before the Lord of Song
With nothing on my tongue but Hallelujah

Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah

Always liked this verse and the tune...

ARTIST: The Marshall Tucker Band
TITLE: Heard It in a Love Song

I never had a damn thing, but what I had I had to leave it behind
You're the hardest thing I ever tried to get off of my mind
Always something greener on the other side of that hill
I was born a wrangler and a rounder and I guess I always will

Some of the best lyrics ever written.....

How Great Thou Art

Lyrics ~ Carl Boberg, 1859 - 1940

English Translation ~ Stuart K. Hine, 1899 -

Stanza 1:

O Lord my God,

When I in awesome wonder

Consider all

The works Thy Hand hath made,

I see the stars,

I hear the mighty thunder,

Thy pow'r throughout

The universe displayed;

Stanza 2:

When through the woods

And forest glades I wander

I hear the birds

Sing sweetly in the trees;

When I look down

From lofty mountain grandeur

And hear the brook

And feel the gentle breeze;

Refrain:

Then sings my soul,

My Saviour God, to Thee,

How great Thou art!

How great Thou art!

Then sings my soul,

My Saviour God, to Thee,

How great Thou art!

"American Pie"
Don McLean

A long, long time ago...
I can still remember how that music used to make me smile.
And I knew if I had my chance,
That I could make those people dance
And maybe they'd be happy for awhile.
But February made me shiver with every paper I'd deliver,
Bad news on the doorstep; I couldn't take one more step.
I can't remember if I cried when I read about his widowed bride,
But something touched me deep inside, the day the music died.

So, bye bye Miss American Pie,
Drove my Chevy to the levee, but the levee was dry.
Them good ole boys were drinking whiskey and rye,
Singing, "This will be the day that I die.
This will be the day that I die."

It is a Christmas Song, but the last verse is so POWERFUL!!

Joy to the World -

He rules the world with truth and grace,
And makes the nations prove
The glories of His righteousness,
And wonders of His love,
And wonders of His love,
And wonders, wonders, of His love.

Say the lines again without the pause of the melody...

And makes the nations prove the glories of His righteousness

"Like A Rolling Stone"
Bob Dylan

You never turned around to see the frowns on the jugglers and the clowns
When they all come down and did tricks for you
You never understood that it ain't no good
You shouldn't let other people get your kicks for you
You used to ride on the chrome horse with your diplomat
Who carried on his shoulder a Siamese cat
Ain't it hard when you discover that
He really wasn't where it's at
After he took from you everything he could steal.

How does it feel
How does it feel
To be on your own
With no direction home
Like a complete unknown
Like a rolling stone ?

Recitation from Too Many Parties and Too Many Pals
as sung by Hank Williams as "Luke the Drifter"

Gentlemen of the jury the judge's speech began
The scene was a crowded courtroom and the judge a stern old man
This prisoner here before you is a social enemy
A lady of the evening and you know the penalty
Her eyes reflect the nightlife her cheeks are red with paint
But I knew her mother gentlemen why her mother was a saint
Now I know that she's not like her and yet she might have been
If it hadn't been for pettin' parties cigarettes and gin
We took the night life off the streets and brought it in our own homes
While girls beguiled with lipstick danced to saxophones
We opened up the underworld to the ones we loved so well
So tell me gentlemen is it right to send her to a cell
If she drinks well you taught her and if she smokes you showed her how
So gentlemen do you think it's right to go and condemn her now
And when you're in that juryroom just remember there and then
That for every fallen woman there's a hundred fallen men
And before you render a verdict on what this girl has done
Just remember that there's a man to blame and that man might be your son
Now gentlemen that's my story my testimony stands
This girl is my own daughter and the case is in your hands

And as we wind on down the road
our shadows taller than our soul
there walks a lady we all know
who shines white light and wants to show
how everything still turns to gold

Just to stay between the shores.

I believe in ghosts and democracy
And that each man should leave his legacy
That mans work great or be it small
I don't believe in everything
Like the designated hitter, or the diamond rings
Can make love last forever for one and all

Cause if everyone should be together
Why are so many left alone?
Life's a lot of tradeoffs in the end
Somewhere in the fields of heaven
Proud Souls laugh and they love together
Somewhere between passion and losing friends

Maybe the best " Leavin' song" of all time:D

Jaded Lover as sung by Jerry Jeff Walker

Well, it won't be but a week or two,
You'll be out lovin' someone new.
It must have happened a hundred times before.
And I can see you been spreadin' yourself thin too.
It's a lonely stage we been goin' through.
Don't get up, I can find my own way to the door.

Chorus:
Well, I can see you are an angel,
whose wings just won't unfold.
Tune up your harp; polish your old halo.
Well the only kind of man that you ever wanted
is one that you knew you'd never hold very long.
You're sittin' there cryin' like I'm the first one to go.

Well, you may have had thirty lovers behind you.
Baby, I can feel you, but I sure can't find you.
Seems like you would have found your own self by now.
But late at night your old lovers' tears come back,
faces in your dreams, fingers in your back,
voices of the memories, cryin' out loud.

Chorus:
Well, I can see you are an angel,
whose wings just won't unfold.
Tune up your harp; polish your old halo.
Well the only kind of man that you ever wanted
is one that you knew you'd never hold very long.
You're sittin' there cryin' like I'm the first one to go.

(Up a step)

Ah, what a joyous sight to see you in your sleep.
I believe I'm leavin'; I'm in too deep,
and that seems easy enough for a man to say.
But we would never agree if we talked all night.
Things are gettin' kind of heavy. I'm travelin' light.
Goodbye you jade lover, you undercover queen
for a day.

Chorus:
Well, I can see you are an angel,
Whose wings just won't unfold.
Tune up your harp; polish your old halo.
Well the only kind of man that you ever wanted
is one that you knew you'd never hold very long.
You're sittin' there cryin' like I'm the first one to go.

"Angel Flying Too Close To The Ground"
Willie Nelson

If you had not have fallen
Then I would not have found you
Angel flying too close to the ground
And I patched up your broken wing
And hung around a while
Tried to keep your spirits up
And your fever down
I knew someday that you would fly away
For love's the greatest healer to be found
So leave me if you need to
I will still remember
Angel flying too close to the ground
Fly on, fly on past the speed of sound
I'd rather see you up
Than see you down
Leave me if you need to
I will still remember
Angel flying too close to the ground

Lookin' in your eyes I see a paradise
This world that I found is too good to be true
Standing here beside you, want so much to give you
This love in my heart and I feel it for you
Let 'em say we're crazy, I'll give a path
Put your hands in my hand baby don't ever look back
Let the world around us, just fall apart
Baby we can make it if we're heart to heart
And we can build this thing together
Standing strong forever
Nothing's gonna stop us now

Consider all

The works Thy Hand hath made,

I see the stars,

I hear the mighty thunder,

Thy pow'r throughout

The universe displayed;

Stanza 2:

When through the woods

And forest glades I wander

I hear the birds

Sing sweetly in the trees;

When I look down

From lofty mountain grandeur

And hear the brook

And feel the gentle breeze;

Refrain:

Then sings my soul,

My Saviour God, to Thee,

How great Thou art!

How great Thou art!

Then sings my soul,

My Saviour God, to Thee,

How great Thou art!

This is a favorite of mine, too, and one I love to sing along to in full voice!

On a much more shallow note:
"On the road again..."
Willie Nelson
Because I love a good road trip and I just feel happy when I hear this song!:D :D
Just got back from one of those great road trips. Went to Norman, OK to the Southland Conference Indoor T & F meet to support a dear young friend/adopted niece of mine compete for UTSA in the pentathlon. She did very well, so congrats to her!!

"WELL, I WAS DRUNK THE DAY MY MOM GOT OUT OF PRISON" - David Allan Coe

Double entendre award to Dewey Cox's "Let's Duet" from Walk Hard:
"In my dreams you're blowing me…Some kisses"
"I'm going to beat off…All my demons"
"You can always come in my backdoor"

Hear that lonesome whippoorwill,
He sounds too blue to fly.
The midnight train is whining low,
I'm so lonesome I could cry.

I've never seen a night so long
When time goes crawling by.
The moon just went behind a cloud
To hide its face and cry.

Did you ever see a robin weep,
When leaves began to die?
That means he's lost the will to live,
I'm so lonesome I could cry.

The silence of a falling star
Lights up a purple sky.
And as I wonder where you are
I'm so lonesome I could cry.

Could be my favorite song of all time. It's hard to have ONE single song as your favorite but I think this one is mine.

I'd love to spit some beechnut in that dude's eyes
and shoot him with my ole 45
cause a country boy can survive

Avenged Sevenfold:

Dear God

"A lonely road, crossed another cold state line
Miles away from those I love
Purpose hard to find
While I recall all the words you spoke to me
Can't help but wish that I was there
Back where I'd love to be, Oh yeah

Dear God, the only thing I ask of you
Is to hold her when im not around
When I'm much to far away
We all need that person who can be true to you
But I left her when I found her
And now I wished I'd stay
'Cause I'm lonely, and I'm tired
I'm missing you again, Oh no
Once again"

I really just love this whole song so I'm putting them all.

What I'm For by Pat Green

I'm for wildflowers in the window
Mechanics you can trust
I'm for crackers in my chili
And leavin' grudges in the dust

I'm for drive thru order takers
Who can muster up a smile
I'm for takin' in that stray dog
That's been hangin' 'round for awhile

I'm for turning off the TV
Gettin' off the internet
I'm for learning all the words
To the Gettysburg Address

I'm for dusty pawn shop guitars
And boxers passed their prime
I'm for soakin' up the wisdom
When an old man speaks his mind.

I'm for laid off factory workers
When the wolf is at the door
You don't have to guess what I'm against
If you know what I'm for

I'm for Texas Margaritas
Gettin' outta debt
I'm for havin' faith in something
That hasn't happened yet

For the shy kid in the corner
Afraid to ask the girl to dance
For the ex-con outta prison
Who just wants a second chance

For the inner city teacher
With her heart stuck in her throat
Can still see God in every child
And never gives up hope

I'm for dusty pawn shop guitars
And boxers passed their prime
I'm for soakin' up the wisdom
When and old man speaks his mind

I'm for Detroit factory workers
When the wolf is at the door
You don't have to guess what I'm against
If you know what I'm for

I'm counting all my blessings
When the wolf is at my door
You don't have to ask what I'm against
You don't have to guess what I'm against
You know what I'm for

When I'm drinking Everclear
I think I'm king of this whole world
I'm bigger and badder than John Wayne
Cooler than Steve Earle
Until I wake up and I'm face down in the hall
Hey I'm completely naked for a reason I can't recall
Well I'm kinda sorta thinking that maybe I met chick
Cause there's perfume in the air
And there's lipstick on my neck
Well I hope that she was pretty
And I hope that she was kind
Enough to leave my clothes somewhere
They're easy to find

Chorus
Tequila dries me out
Beer just makes me fat
Whiskey makes me nauseas
Now tell me who the hell needs that
So if youre thinking about drinking
Well the answers crystal clear
It's the invisible, intoxicating
It's called Everclear

Harsh Realms- Tom Gabel

There's a million things to get done today
I can't come down, I can't think straight
You give a little bit of time to everyone you meet
And what do you say for yourself?
How much money do you need
To give yourself a sense of security?

There's a lot of doctors tell me
That I'd better start slowing it down
But there's more old drunks than there are old doctors
So I guess I'd better have another round
