Familar 3 favored in 31-3a

CORPUS CHRISTI — It’s hard to imagine Falfurrias, Robstown and Sinton not being the three teams to represent District 31-3A in the playoffs.

The entire trio of storied programs reached the postseason a year ago, with the Cotton Pickers and Pirates reaching the regional semifinals. The Jerseys, meanwhile, were eliminated in the first round.

Falfurrias, Robstown and Sinton remain the favorites to take the top three spots in the standings, but at least one coach admits it won’t be an easy task.

“Everything is going less than according to plan, but that’s what happens sometimes,” said Sinton’s Gene Kasprzyk, whose team returns only one starter. “We have a lot of catching up to do. The weather has thrown some curveballs, and we have kids on the disabled list and that are late because of basketball. We knew coming in that we were going to be short on experience.”

Robstown coach Steve Castro expects Mathis to remain competitive and that Orange Grove could be a factor under first-year coach John McBryde. Castro, however, thinks Falfurrias and Sinton are two of the top contenders.

“Sinton is always going to be up there. The same with Falfurrias,” Castro said. “I don’t care how you look at it. A baseball school is a baseball school. They both play the game well and they play to win.”

Falfurrias coach David Salinas said the Jerseys are certainly going to give it a go.

“Robstown and Sinton are going to be really tough, there’s no question about that,” Salinas said. “It’s going to come down to those guys and the rest of us. We’re hoping to get better as we get to district. We have a senior ballclub and I think the maturity is going to help us handle things better. If our pitching improves as the season goes on, I feel we can play with anyone.”

FALFURRIAS JERSEYS

The Jerseys return five players with an abundance of experience, including first-team all-district catcher Robo Cruz. Also back are fellow seniors and second-team picks Michael Longoria (pitcher) and Ryan Regalado (shortstop).

Along with Regalado, Falfurrias has a veteran infield with second baseman Gavin Trevino and third baseman Matt Zuniga returning to their respective positions.

Salinas said returning lettermen Mark Garcia and Mark Gomez will help fill the gaps in the outfield.

“All the guys we have coming back played a lot last year,” Salinas said.

ROBSTOWN COTTON PICKERS

Castro said the key for Robstown will be pitching as the Cotton Pickers have at least six players jostling for position in the rotation.

“I think we have some pretty good arms to compete with,” Castro said. “We just need to get those arms ready for district. That’s what you play for. If you have the pitching you’re always going to be in the ballgame.”

The district’s Sophomore of the Year last season, Michael Velasquez, returns to lead the way on the mound. Randy Flores, Trey Leal and Alex Marroquin are all expected to contribute, as well as Miguel Robles and Justin Velasco.

Each also is a position player and returns with another year of experience.

“We’re just hoping the kids are going to be more competitive now that they’re one year older,” Castro said.

SINTON PIRATES

Infielder Shane Segovia is the lone returning starter with Ryan Cantu and Carson Cave still out with injuries sustained during football season. Cantu and Cave have not been cleared by doctors to return, and Kasprzyk isn’t sure when or if it might happen.

“Losing a couple right off the bat makes it a little bit more challenging,” he said.

Kasprzyk said the situation calls for the coaching staff to look at the junior varsity and freshmen teams for players. This early in the season, he said there is plenty of time to develop a starting lineup.

“We’re at that time of the season when you build the team with tournament games and things like that. We have a good system with the JV and freshmen kids. The problem isn’t with talent but with experience. The only thing you can do is give them the opportunity to get it,” Kasprzyk said.

Robstown finally got their first game in today, after having to cancel the season opener versus Tuloso Midway due soggy field conditions. A 6-0 victory over CC Miller in the opening game of the Bobby Gonzalez Memorial Tournament.

Junior lefty Alex Marroquin got the victory for the Pickers.

Sinton has dominated the district for years. However, Robstown is a great baseball school and has the experience to win the district this year. Sinton is very young and probably will have to be satisfied to just make the playoffs.

Falfurrias and Mathis are always very good. Thank goodness next year we won't be in the same baseball district as Falfurrias and Robstown.

Michael Velasquez for Robstown is an outstanding pitcher. Big lefty with good size and flawless mechanics.. look for him to be pitching at the next level if he keeps his head straight.

Having Robstown and Falfurias in our district sure makes for some competitive baseball. It probably has made Sinton a better team. There just hasn't been much competion in this district for a long time. Sinton has really been dominate. ( I can't believe I said that. It just kills me.):D

games at Pleasanton tournament:
Thursday
Sinton 9 Devine 5 (WP-Leroy Carranza 1-0)
Pleasanton 11 Marion 7

Friday
Pleasanton 10 Sinton 5 (LP-Anthony Banda 0-2)
Marion 10 Devine 9
Sinton 15 Marion 0 (WP-Shane Segovia 1-0, Segovia pitched a 1 hitter)
Devine 7 Pleasanton 4
Saturday
not sure what time they're playing, Devine beat Pleasanton on Friday so Sinton and Pleasanton finished 2-1, but guess Pleasanton plays for the championship and Sinton for 3rd place.

Robstown struggled a bit in their own tournament. Finishing 2-2 with wins over CC Miller and Kingsville. They were defeated by Hebronville and Seguin.

In the victory over Kingsville, JR lefty Michael Velasquez threw a 5 inning hitter with i believe 9 strikeouts.

Up next is the Mira's Sports & More tournament in Corpus Christi. They drew a tough pool group with 4a Flour Bluff and CC Moody, 5th in state and 46th in the nation by Baseball America, and 5A The Woodlands 2nd in the state and 9th in the nation by Baseball America.

This will toughen the team up and prepare them for a tough district schedule.

Rob Zastryzny, the pitcher you guys faced, signed to play ball with the University of Missouri. He is the 4th pitcher in 4 years that will play at a Big 12 school. I believe one at Baylor and two at Oklahoma.

Heard that Jordan John is making a swift recovery from his Tommy John surgery. I was there when he had to pull himself out versus Moody in the playoffs. It seemed like he knew something was not right when he was pitching.

I am perfectly content with Robstown's 7-6 record due the quality of opponents faced.

Three of the six losses were against opponents that are highly ranked in not only the state but the nation. (CC Moody, The Woodlands, and Calallen) Robstown played all three of these games close. The Moody and Woodlands games were tight all the way through. The Calallen game was the only one of these three that was lop sided.

Taking this into consideration and how well this Robstown team played them, I confident that they will be ready for the district opener tonight.

Sinton losses have been to non 3a teams which has been the routine year in and year out. This team still is not close to peaking defensively or offensively but they will be a team to contend with once they get it going, very inexperience team with some good players that are getting use to varsity play and hanged in there with some top rank teams.

This was a badly needed and surprisisng win for Ingleside. The Mustangs are pretty much in a do or die situation every game now. Congrats to the Mustangs.

Pirates need to get their bats working...the guys are still ok and easily in the playoff hunt. there's always the "revenge factor" for the 2nd time around.

In softball I am sure that Robstown beat Mathis so I think they are tied for second and third place. There may be a playoff game to determine who gets second or third or maybe a coin flip. I am sure P4S will let us know.
