OKMULGEE — A fight between school staff and students at Okmulgee High School erupted Thursday as students were reportedly protesting the firing of a coach.

According to Police Chief Joe Prentice, officers received a report of a fight at the high school at 2 p.m.

When the officers arrived, they discovered a number of students in school courtyard and that some were fighting, while others were refusing to disperse when ordered by school personnel, the chief said.

Police helped the school staff in regaining control and dispersing the crowd. Officers remained at the school until it closed to prevent any flareups.

Prentice said no one was seriously injured, noting that the matter is being handled internally by the school.

Some parents claim their children were needlessly manhandled by the school staff, including being put in choke holds, having their arms twisted behind their backs and being pepper-sprayed.

School officials could not be reached for comment Thursday evening
