Grant Koudelka brought home Gilmer’s first regional swimming championship when he won first in the 500-yard freestyle in 4:48.88 at The Woodlands Saturday.

The sophomore swimmer knocked 17.27 seconds off his previous best in the district meet two weeks ago.

Koudelka also finished second to a swimmer from Texarkana, Texas High School, in the 200-yard freestyle with a speed quick enough to qualify him for the second event in Austin. He and a girl from Tyler are the only ones from the local area to qualify for State.

In the 200 free, Koudelka finished in 1:45.99, again a personal best. Koudelka broke the 1:50 barrier which had been eluding him in the prelims with 1:49.63.

Koudelka will swim on Feb. 26 in the preliminaries, and if he qualifies, the finals on Saturday, Feb. 27.

He is the first Buckeye to qualify for the state swim meet.

A week after the state finals, Koudelka travels to College Station, where he will swim in the Speedo Sectionals, the last step before the Junior Nationals
