The oil and gas thread got me wondering about what everyone does for a living.

I moved to Houston recently to work for Parker Drilling as a Project Design Manager.

"Professional occupationist."

What haven't I done? Worked in fabrication as a quality control inspector for a while down in Corpus, was a sports reporter/anchor for a TV station, was a sports reporter for two newspapers, hosted a weekly TV show covering underground and up-and-comers in the music industry (at the time, guys like Lil' Flip, Baby Beesh/Bash, Chamillionaire, Three 6 Mafia, Frankie J, etc, etc), been in many different types of sales, owned (and still own) my own business, and a professional student.

As far as I can remember, that about covers it.

Been in the steel fabrication bussiness all my life.Started as a clerk in the office and latter became shop supervisor.Worked in some shipyards but found out all they do there is weld things togather and take them apart two or three times before they get it right. No wonder a lot of these go under.Took a CWI test and missed it by one question...decided not to pursue that.At present in my latter years I'm estimating for a small fabrication shop...had enough and getting to old for that hands on stuff. This is really the best job I have had.Don't make the money I use to but I'm provided with a company car,get a good quarterly bounes, get to leave around 3 pm every day or sooner and work for a great man.

Sometimes the perks outweigh the rest. I work for a small company, we have NO insurance, NO pension plan....but I do get 3 weeks paid vacation.

I could have left here a long time ago and got another job.....but my husband has great insurance and a great pension plan.

This job allowed me to work only the hours my kids were in school, took off 3 summers in a row so they didn't have to go to daycare.

I never had to miss a football, baseball, or basketball game. I was able to make all school parties and all track meets.

If I feel the least bit under the weather, I am expected to stay home...they don't want it.

I may regret it all when I no longer have this job and have nothing to show for all the years I have been here, but for now, it works great for me.

Quality of Life is a huge benefit Mom! I managed restaurants for 12 years and then opened a Investment Brokerage office and never saw my family or had time to enjoy life. Three years ago I did a 180 and now work a 40 hour a week job with great retirement and ton's of time off. The time you spend with your kids when they are growing up cannot be replaced with any company benefits. Just my opinion.

I hear ya Mom.I pretty much stayed with one company my entire life.Didn't make the big bucks a lot of my friends did doing construction work.I wanted a job that I could depend on and learned to live on what I made.We never had to do without and have a nice life.I'll take that anytime rather than working about 5 to 6 months making big money and worring the rest of the year when I'll be going back to work. When all was said and done the big money makers didn't make that much more than me and I didn't have the worry they had.To each his on.

Grew up farming and ranching. Got enough of that to know there had to be an easier and better way to make a living. But I wouldnt take for all the skills I learned in those days.
Went to college a couple years but dropped out when my appendix ruptured and I nearly died. Was out of commission for a few weeks. Planned on going back to school, but went to work, bought a new pickup, and acquired other debts,,,,,,so much for going back to school.
Worked in the Washington D.C. area for my uncle for a couple summers, climbing trees and doing landscape illumination.
Came back to Texas and started my career in electrical construction. Received my first electrician license in1984, and became a master in 89.
After working in the field for many years, I moved into management in 98.
Eventually became a division manager for the second largest electrical contractor in the nation. I am now back with that company, as an estimator / project manager in their renewable energy division. Best job I ever had, by a long shot. I travel from south Texas to North Dakota, Wyoming to Minnesota, and all points in between. And get paid very well to do it. What’s not to love? I just pray the economy turns around, so I can keep this cushy job.

No DOUBT. No one has seen entitlement until they've worked tax prep for a while. A couple of weeks ago I had to intervene for another preparer whose client was loudly telling everyone in the office that we were "retarded". The reason? She forgot to bring in one of her W-2s and we told her she had to file an amended return.

We usually have two peaks: one that runs from late January to mid February and the other that starts at the beginning of April. We got busy in the middle of January and it hasn't slowed down yet. I think it's the economy. People need money badly.

What in your opinion has changed in the tax laws this year Bullsfan? NOTHING has changed in my life from last year and yet it appears I will owe about 361.00 in taxes and last year I got over 300.00 back! I have talked to several people who say the same thing. A no tax increase from Obama is costing us more money in taxes! What gives?

apparently the $400 'stimulus' given to workers that was spread out over a year was supposed to fatten our wallets and increase spending, when all it really did was increase the amount of tax we owe....

I paid very little attention to what Obama said or did because I knew the guy was a snake but what kind of "Stimulus" is it if they simply reduce the amount of withholding during the year and tack it back on at the end of the year????

But that's not what happened because the total dollars paid in will be higher than it was last year.

His return was reduced and I gave him the IRS # to let him find out why (I told him I could do it but not at that moment as he was demanding). He came back the next day said he talked to the IRS and that they told him to "go back and demand that we print his check". At this point I called the IRS #, put it on speaker and let him clearly hear that he was being mail audited because of a prior year EIC disallowence. So Mr. Einstein takes his return to someone else who without knowing the full details files an amended return. Now his status is unknown and he is begging me to help him fix it. Agin, it is all my fault.

But that's not what happened because the total dollars paid in will be higher than it was last year. Without knowing your exact tax situation it would be difficult to give you an exact answer. It is not the making work pay credit, but what it could be is just a change in tax bracket. It does not take much to change from receiving to paying.

NOTHING has changed in my life from last year and yet it appears I will owe about 361.00 in taxes and last year I got over 300.00 back! I have talked to several people who say the same thing. A no tax increase from Obama is costing us more money in taxes! What gives?

The stimulus happened in two ways--withholding was reduced last year starting in May, which means you should have gotten about $400 extra spread out over the year. But there's also a Making Work Pay credit on your current return which is equal to either $400 for Single, Married Filing Separate, or Head of Household or $800 for Married Filing Joint. That should offset the reduction in withholding. So there really isn't a difference in taxes. Without looking at your last year's and this year's returns, there's not much else I can tell you. It might be a different tax bracket; I'll never forget the year that summer school income was just enough to flip me into the next tax bracket, which meant my withholding the rest of the year was screwy. I got HOSED that year. Fortunately now I'm square in the middle.

You can also have issues if one spouse's income is considerably more than the others. I have one set of clients where the husband's income is almost triple what the wife's is. He's in the 25% bracket and she's in the 10% bracket, the result of which is that she's never taxed correctly for their joint return. I had her change her status on her W4 several years ago to "married but withhold at higher single rate" and put 0 exemptions down, but her salary still affects their refund in a negative way. Now I'm just careful to make sure the return is completed before he ever gets a look at it. ;)

You know, I don't think I've ever had anyone denied EIC before. In fact, I had to look up an 8862 just to find out what it was. But I have a feeling we'll be seeing lots more of those with the new, stricter procedures in place for qualifying for EIC.

The IRS sets a schedule for refunds, but I got mine back about 5 days AFTER I was supposed to. This is the second year they've been late on getting refunds back to people. But boy, if you owe them, they're not nearly so cavalier about deadlines.

People always want to know what is different :evillol: :evillol:

we've used TurboTax for the last 4 years or so. Two years ago, my wife went into business for herself, so we had to upgrade to the Premium TurboTax edition...it takes about a week longer to do, but it's still just as simple and we've always found deductions on it that we wouldn't have been aware of otherwise.

Green Bling! It did involve Scuba at first but over the years I have learned to hold my breath. That saves tons of expense money! Finding them is normally not a problem because when they go at it they make enough noise to hear for miles around. And in order to protect myself from the big hungry females I have hired several of the Moon Natives to put on Tuna suits to distract the attention off of me. Of course that means I have to keep a steady supply of applications on file to replace the slow ones!!!! Hope that helped! :D

That actually is a fairly simple return. IRA contributions are simple; distributions aren't always, especially if you're not old enough to withdraw. And student loan interest is just a straight line deduction.

As to the rest, you would be surprised how many people miss deductions or credits on self-prepared returns, even those with software that holds your hand. Especially people with returns more complicated than yours. We had someone come in yesterday who had done their own return in 2008 and hadn't filed properly in 2007. The IRS was letting her know that she had $900 more coming to her that she'd missed in stimulus money. Which was nice, but I wouldn't always trust the IRS to know I had more coming and send it to me automatically.

Just the software does not catch every deduction that is available. It does what is necessary to calculate your return. It does not pry and dig to get your MAX return. If you stay up to date and know what you are doing you may be OK. If not you are giving away your money.
