Looks like the lighting ceremony had a hitch. Left Steve Nash and Wayne Gretzky hanging.

Yeah, this was probably the worst thing to screw up in my opinion. This obviously stuck out and is the most well known parts of the opening ceremonies.l

This doesnt bode well. Already a death and a screwed up lighting ceremony. The olympics are cursed.

"The gaffe heard 'round the world -- Vancouver organizers had planned for four Olympic cauldrons to be lit by Canada's most famous athletes, but a mechanical error prevented one of the massive torches from rising from the floor of BC Place. Former hockey star Wayne Gretzky, two-time NBA MVP Steve Nash and Alpine skiing legend Nancy Green were able to light their cauldrons, but speedskater Catriona Lemay Doan was left with her flame when the fourth torch failed to emerge from underneath the stadium. It was an embarrassing end to an otherwise flawless Opening Ceremony. Instead of the indelible memory of four cauldron-lighters, this ceremony will be most remembered for the cauldron that wouldn't rise. "

The Chinese spent $300mil+ on their Olympic opening cermonies, the Candians spent $30-40mil on the 2010 opening ceremony. I guess you get what you pay for. I think the Summer Olympics are still considered the "Big Show", however.

yes they are, but I like the Winter Olympics better. I think mainly because besides Hockey, we don't get the opportunity to see the sports up close.

This isn't the first time the Olympics have hit a glitch in the lighting of the torch. As I recall, something went wrong the time Ali did the lighting, and maybe a problem in Sydney, too. The main thing is that we really don't remember those little mishaps for very long. Can't imagine anyone outdoing the Chinese for openings, but maybe Rio will give them a run for their money. Don't think the English will thrill.

Was Ali lighting the torch in Atlanta when all the doves they had
released perched on the cauldron and they ended up get BBQ'd?

OMG, I don't remember that. I just remember that the torch wouldn't light right away.

Well I was just a little bit off.

It was in Seoul back at the '88 Olympics. The lighting is at the
4:30 mark of this video. Not real graphic.

Now the Canadians cannot get the speed skating track ice prepared properly. One thing you would think they would know how to do is get an ice rink prepared right.

Some of those coaches were clearly UNhappy at the condition of the track, and I think I heard the sportscasters say one of the Americans withdrew from the competition. Between this and the luge, I'm really starting to wonder. Why on earth didn't they work all this out before the competition started?

Trust me. The opening ceremony will NOT be remembered for the mess up. Did this person not even watch the rest of it. It was AMAZING!! Way better than Beijing!! (My Opinion) China used so many fireworks that it drained everything else out. In Vancouver, it was indoors! No Fireworks. And they still outdid the Chinese. :D

I can. Especially since the Chinese cheated and used computers to edit in fireworks on TV.

"In an hourlong Tuesday briefing touching on everything from transportation snafus to equipment failures to weather woes to the prison-camp look of the Olympic caldron display, some reporters demanded to know if this might be the worst start ever to an Olympic Games."
