CORSICANA — CORSICANA — The Brownsboro Bearettes have suffered just a handful of losses this season.

After Friday, two have come at the hands of the Fairfield Lady Eagles.

The Lady Eagles will enter the Class 3A playoffs as District 20-3A’s top seed after defeating the Bearettes, 47-35, in a playoff seeding game at the K. and Ida Wolens Special Events Center at Navarro College.

The second-seeded Bearettes, who are co-district champions with the Lady Eagles, will face Lorena Tuesday in a Region III-3A bi-district game at Corsicana High School. A game time was not immediately known Friday night because two games will be played at Corsicana High School that night.

The Lady Eagles (23-9) will get a first-round bye.

Fairfield cleaned up on the boards, outrebounding Brownsboro by a 39-15 margin. Seventeen of those rebounds were on the offensive end, and the Lady Eagles turned those boards into 20 points.

The Bearettes (27-5) never found an answer for junior Courtney Morton, who had 14 points and nine rebounds, or senior Kiresten Cox, who had just seven points but 16 rebounds.

“We gave up more boards than we have in a long time,” Brownsboro Head Coach Fred Griffin said. “The offensive boards really got us.”

The Lady Eagles grabbed six offensive boards in the first quarter, resulting in eight second-chance points. They led the Bearettes, 14-6, heading into the second quarter.

It was in that second frame where Morton did her best to put the Bearettes away all by herself. She scored the first eight points of the quarter for Fairfield, with her layup at the 2:17 mark giving the Lady Eagles a 22-11 lead.

The Bearettes continued to struggle on the offensive end but managed to cut the lead to as little as seven on a pair of Synola Harmon free throws with two minutes left in the third quarter.

Fairfield equalized that effort, however, with an 11-1 run to start the fourth quarter.

“We didn’t run our offense very well,” Griffin said. “We played hard, but we just didn’t play hard enough to win.”

Harmon led Brownsboro with 12 points. Laquesha Cooper tallied nine and Hillary Shaffer finished with eight.
