Maybe Brownwood can schedule them and beat the crap out of them in the regular season and in district.

Pro style offense this year, and I would guess the same for next year. They may line up with one WR, 2 TE and 2 RB or 4/5 WR. They can spread you out and throw every play on a drive or play power football and run the ball down your throat. The defense bases out of a 4-3, but it to lines up in several different formations. Hope this helps.

Abilene is a state title team with nearly every key player back, remote location and teams aren't real willing to drive to Abilene and get a butt kicking.

Abilene Wylie again fairly remote location, very good program, having to schedule six non-district games hurts also. I also don't think Wylie really worked on any scheduling until Monday and got caught in a scramble. Fort Stockton is open Week 4 but they shot Wylie down

With Wylie they are playing 3A teams in district and no 4A teams around it is tough when you win regularly....heck even some teams east of Abilene (4A) and the panhandle are having a tough time with schedules.

Surprised that they did not schedule Vernon. We have had a lot of non-district games with the Bulldogs over the recent past. Of course maybe Vernon is ready for some relief from that too!

I don't think Wylie waited until Monday to find non-district opponents, but rather they had several schools turn them down before then. The last several years they played 4A Canyon and Frenship along with several 3A schools.

It is my understanding that most of these schools said no thanks, which I take as they are tired of having Wylie kick their butt and the travel cost to travel could also play a factor.

Wylie has never been afraid of playing top 4A/3A competition and the coaching staff knows that when you start district each team is 0-0, so their non-district schedule is meant to get them ready for the district / playoff season.

Just my 2 cents worth. I still think Wylie will be able to complete their schedule.

I'm sure that played a role also, good teams have trouble finding games. Pretty sure Wylie will find a Week 4 game at the regional meetings.

Sandifer doesn't like 5 team districts and apparently neither do
any other coaches in 5-3A.

Courtesy of the UIL, the district formerly known as 2-3A received a makeover and a title change Monday though four of the league’s six schools will remain rivals for the next two school years.

Graham, headed north into District 6-3A with five Wichita Falls-area schools while Breckenridge, which dropped to Class 2A, are gone. Replacing them is former 4A school Big Spring, which will join Wylie, Brownwood, Snyder and Sweetwater in the five-team 5-3A.

The reaction from the league’s coaches to their new district was a little different than the shock and excitement seen in February 2008, when the UIL put together what many considered a “super district” and called it 2-3A.

That was proven this past fall, when Wylie advanced to the Division I title game, Graham to the Division II championship and Brownwood got to third round.

This time, the biggest news seemed to be the UIL’s decision to fill all 32 3A districts, which eliminated the four byes from the playoff bracket, left four Region I districts with five or fewer teams and forced area coaches to find six nondistrict games.

Two years after the UIL expressed a desire go away from districts of five or fewer teams, there were five five-team districts and one four-team league in 3A announced Monday. The sudden change in philosophy left several 5-3A coaches scratching their heads.

“That really surprised me that you go to a five-team district,” Wylie coach Hugh Sandifer said. “(Class) 3A always has the fewest number of schools in it and when they put us (in this district), where travel’s hard anyway, you have start looking for six (non-district games). It’s just impossible.”

By the time he left the Region 14 Education Service Center on Monday, Sandifer had just one nondistrict game filled, and it was against former 2-3A rival Graham. By day's end, he had four commitments.

“We’ll get on the phone and talk to some people that have called other people looking for games,” Sandifer said. “I thought our district might split up and we could pick up some different teams. But we all stayed the same except for Graham and Breckenridge dropping down.

“I thought those guys might all go west and we might have a shot. But no, we’re scrambling right now.”

And while the league’s other coaches are having a little easier time finding games, the need to find six opponents before the start of a district is a concern for all. Coaches said they also have to take into account the travel costs for nondistrict road trips.

“Definitely the first thing you notice is the five-team district,” Sweetwater’s Craig Slaughter said. “That just really kind of messes some things up with scheduling, and I mean for all sports.

“I noticed one of those districts was a four-teamer, which is a true nightmare. But it’s just one of those dilemmas that UIL has to deal with and we’ll have to deal with it because they have to deal with it.”

The five-team district also changes when teams will have their bye weeks. Over the past two years, all but two of the schools scheduled their open weeks the week before the start of the district schedule. But with five teams, there will be an odd team out each week, forcing the schools to use their byes during the district season.

“I’m not going to gripe because there are some people in the state that have 10-team districts, but it does make it more difficult to find games,” Brownwood’s Bob Shipley said. “And I always like to put my open date right before district just to try to get the guys that are beat up a little bit healthy. But it looks like we’ll play two district games, have an open date and play two more district games.”

The one 5-3A school that did get what it was expecting was Big Spring, which with an enrollment of 974 was widely thought to be dropping to 3A. Big Spring will be the biggest school in the district, dropping Wylie from the top spot for the first time in 3A.

Defensive coordinator Don Kelso, who was in Abilene while head coach Phillip Ritchey attended a similar meeting in Midland, said the Big Spring staff is excited about its new district.

“I think it worked out good for us,” he said. “It will be a little better for us in travel. And I think it’s going to be a challenging district that’s real competitive.”

“The kids, they think, ‘Oh we dropped to 3A,’ but it’s not going to be easy. It’s going to be tough week in and week out, but that’s just the way it is and that’s the way you want it.”

Any updates on week 4? Which Waco team?

I have heard that Canyon wanted to schedule a game but couldn't make the open weeks work out. I am sure that there are plenty of people that will play Wylie, sometimes it's just a matter of schedules aligning.

Canyon did want to play but they are open Week 2, I think they will play Denison in Sweetwater at the Sammy Baugh Classic.

Abilene Wylie has the following teams scheduled, to my knowledge they are still looking for a Week 4 game

Week 0: LaVernia
Week 1: Stephenville
Week 2: Graham
Week 3: Waco High
Week 4: ???
Week 5: Lubbock Estacado
