View Full Version : Schools Where Football Is Not King?

Can you think of any schools where football is not king because their other athletic teams have had better success or are more renowned in other sports?

Several years ago I went to a Canton football game and I was surprised to hear the fans talk about their band more than the football team. As a matter of fact, many fans got up and left the stands after the band's halftime show. I think Canton has improved in football in recent years and the band is no longer as dominant as it once was. I hate to see jealousy between any extra-curricular activities at schools---I think they ought to all support one another, but there is no denying that football is 'king" in Texas highschools.

Krum and Ponder.

Whitesboro also has a better Band than football team.

Robstown. It's all about baseball down there.

Also, Lufkin Hudson and Pharr Valley View.

Krum now participates in football and has a new stadium. I think in a couple of years they will have their first seniors on the football team. It will be interesting to see if Krum will embrace and have as much success in football as it has had in the past in basketball.

That is correct. They put the field turf down for the band not for football in Canton. But they do have one of the best bands in the state. The band is king.

Isn't it time to tell some of your athletes to turn left? Wouldn't want them getting lost! LMAO

West Oso has plenty of athletes and I think of them as a basketball school first. Hell, their AD is the basketball coach.

Same at Falfurrias. They are a baseball school. AD is head baseball coach.

North Lamar- I think of them as more of a baseball program.

Dallas Madison - more round ball than football.

Snook is starting football but No doubt, basketball is still king. I do however remember the Kerr boys and that dominant track team they had in like '79 or '80. They were unbelievable.

Forney has turned into a band school.

But when the band is getting 10th at state and the football is barely getting into playoffs it tends to happen.

Peaster, in 2A. They don't have a football team, just a bunch of kids that can really play some basketball.

Bullard - They haven't made the playoffs in a VERY LONG TIME in football, but they usually put out some really good basketball and baseball teams.
