I am not a musician, but thru the years I have always been envious of my friends who could play the guitar. Now, in the autumn of my years--I think I might like to take up learning to play. Any suggestions for a guitar and best way to learn to play?

many to choose from

my first one that I first learned on was a low end Yamaha package ..... then once I figured out I could indeed learn & started to make progress I upgraded

here are a few examples

Yamaha (http://www.guitarcenter.com/Yamaha-GigMaker-Acoustic-Guitar-Pack-102920113-i1150348.gc)

Epiphone (http://www.guitarcenter.com/Epiphone-DR-90S-Solid-Top-Acoustic-Player-Pack-518769-i1167497.gc)

Fender (http://www.guitarcenter.com/Fender-DG-8S-Acoustic-Guitar-Value-Pack-104506415-i1146547.gc)

of course you can go really low end and get just a guitar for less than $100 but I'd recommend the package

Thanks 3A--I knew that you and several other posters were ardent guitar players and could give some good info. My greatest concern is whether or not my fingers are still agile enough to make the chords and if I have enough patience with the learning process.

I bought my Yamaha back in 1975 for $220.00. That was when we got a $200 rebate and President Ford requested us to spend the money to help the economy. So I went to the music store and brought it. It is still going strong even though I really play more at it than play it. But I got my money's worth.

Does the "Sinton Matador" pay taxes on all that money he earns playing music on Sinton streetcorners? :D

I say that a lot to my grown kids, too, 3AFan....:D

Back to the guitar lessons. Some folks have told me that it is easier to make the chords on a guitar that has the strings pretty close to the frets---that true?

yes that true - but there is a balance

strings too close & you'll get a buzz when you play (not THAT kind of buzz!) ...... that comes from the strings actually touching the frets as they vibrate ...... whoever you get the guitar from should set it up for you, and most are set up at the factory before shipping

As for as th BEST guitar for the money. Find a used guitar made by and called "The Heritage". These are made in Kalamazoo Mi. in the old Gibson plant by the old guys that made Gibson great. when Gibson moved to Nashville many did not want to leave so they bought the old factory and continued to make awesome guitars. for whatever reason their resale value is well below their initial value and their quality. You can find a Heritage 150 which is in essence a Les Paul custom for less than 1000. compare a Gibson of lesser quality for 3000+

I like what Kona produces. They are cheaper guitars in that range you speak of, but they sound great.

Not yet, 3AF, but I think my granddaughter may be getting started at the tender age of 6. She is a gal who jumped on the first two-wheeler bike she ever saw and took off riding and has never fallen yet to my knowledge....I'll probably follow, but it will be a while yet.
