Lock, Shadden make 3A All-State Team

By STEPHEN MONAHAN

Two players recently were named to The Associated Press Class 3A All-State Team.

Gainesville Leopards sophomore linebacker Landon Lock and Whitesboro’s Ethan Shadden were the two area players named to the Class 3A All-State Team.

Lock was named as second-team linebacker while Shadden was selected as honorable mention linebacker.

Lock was an integral part of the Leopards 2009 season, which saw an increased number of wins from the previous two years. The Leopards finished 5-5 in 2009, but those 5 wins were more than Gainesville recorded in the previous three seasons combined (2-8 in 2008, 1-9 in 2007, 1-9 in 2006).

Lock was named Defensive Newcomer of the Year in District 9-3A. Shadden was named to the first-team at linebacker in the district.

Could this mean Cordell might be heading back to Leopard Land?

Ricky Lock is returning to Gonzales.

Lock was named the school's athletic director and head football coach at a specially-called meeting of the Gonzales school district board of trustees on Monday night.

Lock received a unanimous 7-0 vote, according to Gonzales school district superintendent Vic Salazar. He was selected from a group of three finalists that included Danny Malone of Nebraska and Katy Morton Ranch's Stan Howard.

Lock was the athletic director and head football coach at Gonzales in 2007. He led the Apaches to a 10-3 record and an appearance in the Class 3A, Division I quarterfinals.

He left to become the athletic director and head football coach at Gainesville, where he had a 7-13 record. Gainesville went 5-5 last season, after going 2-8 in 2008. Lock has been a head coach for 14 seasons and has an overall record of 87-60.

Lock will replace Kris Micheaux, who resigned after two seasons. Gonzales went 1-9 last season and 0-5 in District 28-3A.

Lock's status still up in air

By STEPHEN MONAHAN

Register Staff Writer

There is no word yet on the status of Gainesville head football coach Ricky Lock and whether or not he has accepted the position of athletic director and football coach with the Gonzales Independent School District.

The Gonzales school board voted unanimously Monday night to hire Lock to head up the Apache football program.

Gonzales Superintendent Vic Salazar said Tuesday that Lock had told him prior to Monday’s meeting that he wanted the position.

No formal acceptance by Lock has taken place as of press time.

KGAF 1580 AM reported Wednesday morning that Gainesville school officials said Lock wants a couple of days to think about whether or not he wants to take the job again at Gonzales.

Lock coached the Apaches in 2007 and led the team three rounds deep in the playoffs and a 10-3 record.

As a coach for the Leopards, Lock is 7-13 overall and finished the 2009 season 5-5 with a 1-4 district record. That lone win coming against Whitesboro.

The Gonzales Supt. was suppossed to stay on an additional two years, but the Gonzales Inquirer reports that he is going to retire this summer.

Could Lock be having seconds thought, with a new boss (who might want his own "man") coming in this summer?

The two other candidates Danny Malone and Stan Howard better keep their ears open.

Salazar leaving as superintendent

By NICOLE W. LITTLE/news@gonzalesinquirer.com

It appears the Gonzales Independent School System will be looking for a new superintendent.

That issue has been in the discussion for quite some time when it comes to the status of Superintendent Vic Salazar.

Before the current school year, Salazar had indicated he would stay this year and then retire from the job. At one point, the board said they would begin searching for a new superintendent.

Now, an "action needed" item which appeared on last night's agenda of the GISD board meeting said, "Superintendent search."

I sure hope this works out for Gonzales. The Apaches and Gobblers should be the two powers in our district. Good Luck!

Coach Lock signed his contract with Gonzales Wednesday afternoon according to the Gonzales Inquirer. Looks like it's official even though according to the Gainesville Register, he has not yet resigned that position.

Congrats to the Apache Nation! This will make the district very interesting assuming UIL leaves us together. Hate using that "assuming" word, because if it's inherent consequences.:D :D
