If Colt doesn't come back, the only way the Horns have remote chance at keeping it close is to open up the playbook. I know that gives UT a chance at making mistakes but they have no chance against the Bama defense with a conservative approach

Many thoughts right now....This game just doesn't have the "feel" of the quality product I was expecting for an NC game---and that's not just because I am a UT fan. From Musberger, the bush league camera work by ABC on down to the Colt injury and the play of the UT freshaman QB--just isn't going together to make a quality product.

I say UT neds to call the plays that have a chance of working and to heck with the notion of the freshman QB can't execute---he may make some more big errors but eventually he may find himself. 'Bama is way too good to just have about 3 running plays in your playbook. There is a small chance that McCoy may try to return and be the "hero" but I think that is a slim chance.

This is just a crying shame for the UT players who have come so far---but the great ones find a way to overcome any adversity.

Having McCoy back would be great, but he'd a fool to risk further injury prior to the Combine and the draft. He's got a future to protect. I don't blame him one bit for protecting his interests.

I agree.

You can't expect to play "conservative" and win just 5 minutes into the game. Especially now being down 24-6. I say come out and call the game as if Colt was in there playing and force the freshman to step up. Even if that fails miserably, I believe it will give you a better chance than calling plays to where the defense never has to back more than 5 yards away from the line of scimmage.

I find it amazing that a organization like Texas that is called one of the top NCAA programs in the nation didn't have a better backup QB in the wings! Gilbert will be fine in a few years but he was not close to being ready to play in that game last night. Someone for Texas should have known that Colt could get hurt at any moment. If Gilbert was their decision at backup then they should have had him better prepared to play. He needed ton's of experience before gettting thrown to the Bama defense.

Colt would have made a huge difference. Alabama was not nearly as strong as I thought. I really figured the score would be astronomically higher once Colt was out. Texas if not for mistakes at the very position (Qb) Colt played, would have made this a much better game. We can't know for sure, but a true freshman performed admirably.

I do wish the Longhorns would've let Gilbert play more during the regular season. I think that came back to haunt them in this game. A more experienced Gilbert would've given Texas a better chance of winning this one, but that's the breaks.:( I do think Texas would've won this game if Colt hadn't have gotten hurt, but congratulations to Alabama for taking advantage and winning the MNC. I could see the air come out of the sails of the Longhorns when Colt got hurt. I knew then that the Longhorns chances of winning this game were very slim, yet they showed a lot of heart.

Alabama's D was good, but it isn't that hard to be when you know what's coming.

Alabama's OC turned into the WOS OC in the 2nd half, but the Texas D was relentless early on, freaked out when Colt went out, then settled back down.

McElroy was a non-factor, IMO. Trust me, I know scoreboard is the only thing that matters, but what was their 3rd down conversion rate?

Anyway, it's all moot now.

Texas haters will say Alabama was SO much stronger, when in reality this game woulda, shoulda, coulda, been a barn burner and damn near was!

I'm sure it will. It's over and done with now, though, and doesn't matter to me. What I THINK would've happened, and what others THINK would've happened without the Colt injury will not make a difference in the outcome of last night's game. Alabama won, Texas lost. Its sad that the National championship was effected by a thing like that so early. If it happened in the 4th then maybe it would not be such a big thing. I know that if Ingrahm was put out in the second drive it would have taken alot out of the game. As a Texas fan I would not want that to happen because I would not want anything to take away from the luster of beating Alabama at FULL strength. Kinda Like General Patton getting upset when he learned that His first victory over the Germans wan not agains General Romel but some subordinate. its Just not as sweet as beating a team at full strenght.

Goldie, being picked as a favorite doesn't actually put points on the board. Regardless, I believe the consensus among many is that if Colt had been in there Bama wouldn't have scored 37 in the first place. Gilbert passed for nearly 200 yards on the bama defense with 2 touchdowns, so yes, I think Colt could have had success. Bama's secondary couldn't cover the Texas receivers consistently. Texas dropped too many passes. However Texas defense played well enough to win. With Colt, it is certainly a different game. Might not have won, but certainly could have.

Farmersfan
01-08-2010, 11:53 AM
Colt would have made a huge difference in that game. I would not think Colt would have thrown 4 ints and for sure Colt recognizes that unblocked blitz that caused the fumble at the end of the game and gotten rid of the ball. I'm not a Texas fan but I recognize the Texas loss was primarily due to the Colt injury! Gilbert had about 4 minutes of brilliance and 52 minutes of not knowing where the hell he was at or what he was doing. He had many dropped passes but he also had some caught that were thrown horribly off target. A freshman backup CANNOT be expected to play in a National Championship game. The game moves too fast and there is too much pressure.

in the locker room, Colt told his dad Said Brad McCoy, who coached his son at Jim Ned High School in tiny Tuscola, Texas: "He looked up at me and said, 'Dad, I had 'em. I had 'em. I knew everything they were doing before they did it. I was fixin' to complete every pass I was going to throw tonight.'"

and I believe this, not just because I'm a Texas fan but because you could see what was unfolding in thos 1st five plays and it was amazing. Say what you want but Saban was scared of McCoy, didn't want him to see the field and evidence of that was the fake punt on the first drive, I believe Saban believed if the Horns score first, the game is over.

Still can't get over the shovel pass with :15 left in the half. Surprising that a coach of Mack Brown's experience would call such a play so deep in his own territory with an untested and nervous freshman QB under center. I'm sure Mack would like to have this play back, too---I think it was the biggest turning point of the game other than McCoy's injury.
