View Full Version : NCAA: Best All-Time QB/RB/WR?

Saw a similar question on another forum, was a good debate.

What all-time QB, all-time RB, and all-time WR would you pick from your favorite college team? They don't have to be from the same era, just had to have played for the same team.

EX:
Pitt
QB: Dan Marino
RB: Tony Dorsett
WR: Larry Fitzgerald
(Just a quick example, may be very wrong... I'm not too "up" on Pitt football.)

And while we're at it, which school that you can think of had the "best" all-time threesome?

Some other impressive threesomes:

(H)=Heisman winner

Miami
QB: Testaverde (H)/Torretta (H)/Kosar/Ken Dorsey/Jim Kelly (I've seen all five on the other thread)
RB: Ottis Anderson/Edgerrin James/Clinton Portis
WR: Michael Irvin/Santana Moss/Brian Blades

Notre Dame:
QB: Paul Hornung (H)/Angelo Bertelli (H)/Johnny Lujack/Joe Theismann
RB: George Gipp
WR: Tim Brown (H)/Raghib Ismail

Florida State:
QB: Charlie Ward (H)
RB: Warrick Dunn
WR: Fred Biletnikoff

Stanford:
QB: Jim Plunkett (H) (John Elway was also mentioned, but Plunkett seemed to be a better college player)
RB: Ernie Nevers
WR: Bill McColl (???)

Alabama:
QB: Joe Namath
RB: Shaun Alexander
WR: Lee Roy Jordan

Iowa had a surprisingly good lineup:
QB: Chuck Long
RB: Nile Kinnick (H)-NOTE: Played both RB and QB.
WR: Tim Dwight

I don't doubt that USC has some great ones too. Off the top of my head, QB's Carson Palmer and Matt Leinart won Heismans along with RB's Reggie Bush, Marcus Allen, and OJ Simpson. Also had Keyshawn Johnson and Lynn Swann at WR.

For Florida, I'd take:

Anthony Carter at WR...he was awesome back in the early 80's.

Also, Braylon Edwards' father Stanley was a heckuva RB for Michigan back then too.

This man, knows his football players. Earl Campbell was the best running back ever to play the game. Plus, he's a class act OFF of the football field as well.

A few years back, a local TV station here in Houston decided they should do an "expose" with their dirt-diggers (dirt-baggers?) on Earl Campbell. They ran a lead story on evening news about UT employing Earl to help with recruiting and the jist of the "expose" was that Earl was being paid for doing nothing. That story fell so flat that it was run once and never heard from again.

It was actually amusing that a media outlet would try to dis' someone who is an icon in this area. If there had been any dirt to the story it might have gone somewhere, but man they shut up in a hurry.

So a guy who at one time set the NCAA record for most rushing yards in a career couldn't carry the jock of another Heisman trophy winner? That argument is illogical because both are great and would be interchangable.

I prefer my kids have a role model that's not a pothead. Having said that, Ricky Williams is a good running back, just not role model material in my book.

When I was growing up, I wanted to be Johnny Unitas. Tell me of a kid that doesn't pick a player and want to be him.
I agree that parents should be role models, but I'm also realistic.
