And when it's over and done . . .
After being awarded the state championship trophy, Godfrey held the plaque above his head for a swarm of photographers.
But, before he passed on, Godfrey showed a caring, emotional side that distinguished him as a person maybe more than his talent distinguished him as a football player.
"Mrs. Camp! Mrs. Camp! Where's Mrs. Camp," Godfrey called out, amongst the hysteria. "Where is she?!"
Godfrey went in search of the widow of the late Matt Camp, the longtime voice of the Gilmer Buckeyes that died of cancer midway through the regular season. After half-circling the mob of Buckeye players, band, cheerleaders and fans, Godfrey completed his search.
"This is for you, Mrs. Camp," Godfrey said, lowering the trophy from over his head and extending it toward her. "This is all for you."
Eyes watered as the two embraced in a heart-felt hug of gratitude, surrounded by the applause of Buckeye fans that knew the significance of the scene.
Call it a "bullseye" for the Buckeye that delivered a black eye to many opponent over the past three seasons.
