I have great respect for both teams. I'm confident that both teams will "leave it all on the field", both are very deserving.

I met some fine Abilene folks, prior to our game. My prayer is that fans from both teams have a safe trip and that there will be a great game with no injuries.

I've not seen Gilmer play, I just am now a fan of Abilene Wylie, until next year. My Lovejoy Leopards return 8 on both sides of the ball, and I hope we get to do this again next year. ;)

Monsters in the middle
Gilmer's Wilson, Castro terrorize opposing offenses

By RICK KRETZSCHMAR

Thursday, December 10, 2009

GILMER — Tackle by Mikey Wilson.

Tackle by Luis Castro.

Those announcements have been common at Gilmer football games this year with Wilson the middle linebacker or Castro the defensive tackle making plays on their own, and sometimes together.

Wilson and Castro are Gilmer's monsters in the middle, the heart of the defense which has helped the Buckeyes advance to Saturday's Class 3A Division I state championship game against Abilene Wylie.

Wilson, who has been a starter for three years, leads Gilmer with 157 tackles this season while Castro is second for the Buckeyes in tackles with 120, an extraordinarily large number for a defensive lineman. Wilson also has a fumble recovery, a sack and an interception, and Castro has four sacks and a pair of fumble recoveries.

Spectators who monitor Gilmer football players before they enter high school know Wilson and Castro have been mauling runners which have dared to enter their middle ground for over a decade. They have played football together since kindergarten.

The twist to their careers is their roles were once reversed.

Castro was once a middle linebacker while Wilson played nose tackle. They made the switch in the seventh grade, when they played for Gilmer Junior High School under coach Elvis Jackson.

Castro said he was told before his seventh-grade year he would be moved. He acknowledges it was probably for the best because he didn't quite have the speed at linebacker. Castro said he wasn't angry about the move at all.

"I just told myself I just had to be the best defensive tackle I could be," Castro said.

Castro didn't directly replace Wilson and vice versa. Wilson was moved from nose tackle in the middle of a game against Pleasant Grove later that year and has remained at linebacker ever since.

"I think coach Jackson was impressed with how I tackled someone from linebacker, and I had decent speed," Wilson said.

Castro said he felt comfortable with playing defensive tackle immediately. Both Wilson and Castro were on Gilmer's varsity team by the time they were sophomores and Castro cracked the starting lineup in 2008.

Wilson had an even faster impact, entering Gilmer's starting lineup for its 2007 team, which advanced to the Class 3A Division I state-title game before falling to Liberty Hill. That season ended an adjustment period for Wilson.

"I felt comfortable playing linebacker my sophomore year," Wilson said. "If you're good enough to play with all the good junior and seniors on that team, you get confidence."

Wilson and Castro have helped Gilmer to a 25-2 record the past two seasons. Wilson — who is 5-11 and weighs 205 pounds — said Castro is a good player because of the way he comes off the ball and his speed. Castro — who is 5-11, 220 — said Wilson is good because of his intensity and determination.

On the field they have a lot to say to each other. Castro said they talk to each other before every play, with the exception of an occasional fourth-down play where one player or the other isn't on special teams.

Gilmer coach Jeff Traylor said their combined results are interesting considering their off-field personalities. Wilson and Castro are both captains for Gilmer's defense.

"It's something because Mikey is more reserved. Luis is very outspoken," Traylor said. "They're both great kids in their own ways."

Wilson said Castro and himself sometimes spend time together away from football, including four-wheeling at the Wilson family farm.

Both players said they are preparing for the time when they won't patrol the middle of the field together anymore, although Louisiana College has shown interest in recruiting both players. Wilson said he has received other college interest from Tulsa, Missouri Southern, Emporia State and the University of Texas at San Antonio. Castro said he has received some interest from Montana State, Angelo State and Harding University.

"I think Mikey has the size to play linebacker in college now," Traylor said. "I think Luis needs to put on about 20 pounds in muscle, but he's tough and he would put in the work to make it."

Both players said it would be a change to master the middle of a field without the other player around. Wilson said what Castro has done off the field has usually picked his spirits up.

"When I'm down, he's there to create a smile on his face," Wilson said.

Castro said the impact of Wilson's personality will be with him years from now.

"I will miss his intensity," Castro said. "It sticks with you in other parts of your life."

HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL PLAYOFFS
WYLIE VS. GILMER, 2007
■ Wylie had its chances, but Gilmer made the last big play

DANIEL YOUNGBLOOD
youngbloodd@reporternews.com / 325-676-6771
As Wylie and Gilmer prepare for their Class 3A Division I state title match_up Saturday at SMU’s Ger_ald J. Ford Stadium, it’s hard for both teams not to think about what happened the last time these two teams met.
That’s because the two teams’ first and only meet_ing, a 28-21 Gilmer win in the 2007 state semifinals, left a lasting impression on both teams.
For Wylie, which saw its title hopes dashed by a 34-yard Gilmer screen pass with 9 seconds left, that game has served as motiva_tion heading into a much_anticipated rematch.
And for Gilmer coach Jeff Traylor, that matchup remains an example of what high school athletics should be.
“I’ve coached for 10 years and I’ve never written, but I wrote a letter to (Wylie’s) superintendent and their school board when we played them in 2007 because I still think Abilene Wylie is the greatest program we’ve ever played against,” Tray_lor said. “From the band to the crowd to the players, I’ve never played a game where I saw so much class as in 2007.”
Traylor’s club, which entered that game at 13-0, led 14-0 seven minutes in thanks to a pair of touch_down passes from sopho_more quarterback Darian “Stump” Godfrey to Hous_ton Tuminello.
But a fumble recovery in the end zone by Wylie line_backer Trevor Casey made the score 14-7 at halftime, and the Bulldogs scored the first two touchdowns of the second half — a 1-yard quarterback sneak by Jared Wallace and an 11-yard run by Cameron Rogers — to go up 21-14 midway through the third.
That lead stood until the 11:46 mark of the fourth quarter, when Gilmer’s Jus_tin Johnson ran seven yards for a score to tie the game at 21.
Wylie threatened to pull back ahead midway through the fourth quarter, gaining a first down to the Gilmer 3. But the Buckeye defense stiffened and forced a 25_yard field goal attempt that was missed.
A Matt Field intercep_tion that he returned to the Gilmer 33 gave the Bulldogs another chance to take the lead. But Wylie was unable to do anything with it, and instead of punt_ing on fourth-and-13 from the 36, Wylie coach Hugh Sandifer elected to go for it and an incomplete pass gave the Buckeyes the ball back with about a minute remaining.
“No, you can’t replay it … we had a great season and you leave it at that,” Sandi_fer said of the fourth-down decision. “As a coach, you reflect on it and you learn, but you wouldn’t be in this business very long if you did that (agonized over a decision).”
The Buckeyes, who had been limited to 267 yards to that point, then used two huge plays to springboard them to victory. A 32-yard scramble by Godfrey put Gilmer in Wylie territory, and a 34-yard screen pass to Lamar Harris put the Buckeyes ahead by seven with just nine seconds re_maining.
A nice kickoff return and a 13-yard completion gave Wylie one last shot from the Gilmer 39. But Wallace’s desperation heave was in_tercepted, ending the game and Wylie’s season at 11-3.

That game in 2007 was one to remember.

It was a great game played by 2 great teams that came down to the final seconds. Oh, and Gilmer won!

Wylie, Gilmer live up to preseason hype

http://www.reporternews.com/news/2009/dec/10/familiar-favorites/

It’s rare that pundits are able to successfully predict state finalists during the preseason, but when it comes to Class 3A Division I, eyes have been on Wylie and Gilmer since the two teams opened fall camp.

With the talent each team returned from successful 2008 campaigns — Wylie reached the Division I semifinals; Gilmer bowed out in the Division II quarters — the two schools were trendy choices for the title game by many this year, including Dave Campbell’s Texas Football magazine.

And with the success each program has had in its history, it’s not hard to see why so many liked the two teams out of the gate.

The two schools each have won a state title — both coming in 2004, coincidentally — and had a combined seven state finals appearances, 11 trips to the semifinals and nearly 130 playoff games.

Gilmer has had a longer playoff record than Wylie, first appearing in the state playoffs (Class B) in 1926 and winning its first playoff game in 1928 — 20-6 over Center.

The Buckeyes went from 1965 to 1980 without making the playoffs. In 1980, Gilmer lost in bidistrict on penetrations to Van after the teams tied 7-7. Van lost in the 3A state finals that year to Pittsburg, which shut out previously unbeaten Stamford, 35-0, in the semifinals.

The next year, Gilmer beat Van in bidistrict on its way to its first state championship, a 28-3 victory over Cameron Yoe.

There was a 10-year playoff drought from 1991-2001 before the Bucks got going again.

Wylie had all of two playoff appearances until 1984, losing a Class B bidistrict game to Rule in 1949 (25-0) and a Class 1A bidistrict game to Albany (27-13) in 1951.

The Bulldogs made the playoffs three times in the 1980s, going 1-3. Wylie was in the 1990 and 1992 playoffs but hit full stride in 1994, when its current string of 16-straight playoff appearances began with a run to the semifinals.

Both programs have reached their heights under their current coaches.

Wylie, which has made 19 of its 22 playoff appearances under 24-year coach Hugh Sandifer, has reached the semifinals seven times under his guidance and will be making its third state finals appearance since 2000 on Saturday.

And in 10 years under coach Jeff Traylor, who played at Gilmer and spent 10 years as an assistant there before getting the head coaching job, the Buckeyes have reached the playoffs nine times, including trips to the state finals in 2004, 2007 and this season.

Put all that together, and you have what both coaches are expecting to be a battle.

“Everybody in the state’s been kind of looking for this matchup, I think,” Sandifer said. “I know we have.”

Nobody said it was a "Wylie spy" that I'm aware of. They didn't get any credentials as to where the feller was from, but there was somebody there that was turned away from football practice by the police because he had a video camera. Makes ya wonder, though.

The policeman didn't divulge where he was from, but he was turned away for some reason OTHER than paranoia. That's all I know.

Well, take a valium and get over it. Maybe there were some details that were inaccurate but it didn't distort the overall content of the article. Every single thing that was in the ARN today about Gilmer was extremely complimentary. I bet the Gilmer "Weekly Yodeller" didn't go to the effort to print a lot of stuff about Wylie.

Actually, all the sports articles about the Buckeyes are written by Joe Dodd, who does an excellent job. You can go to the Gilmer Mirror 's website and read his write-up. Here's the link:

The Gilmer Mirror's pre-game story will be in tomorrow's issue. In the Wednesday edition of the paper (the Yoddler comes out twice a week), there were summaries of the games of both teams, the playoff brackett for Division I, and a detailed analysis of the Gilmer -Cuero game.

The publisher even went into the archives and came up with two photos from the 2007 game at Birdwell Stadium.

I was among the persons contacted by the Abilene reporter. He was working, he said, on a story about the community's response/preparations for the game.

He did want to film the practice and was turned down. No one films the Buckeye practices but the Buckeye staff for training purposes. Area media have to schedule interviews with players which will be held not during practice time but when the student has an off period. Traylor also determines who is interviewed because he does not want only one player getting all the air time. He has done this since 2004 that I personally can vouch for, maybe longer. For the same reason no Buckeye wears number 1, Traylor wants to insure no one player hogs all the interviews.

Didn't read it anywhere. Just heard it around town. Like most rumors...it is just bunk. however, the true part is the police did ask somebody to leave school property last week with a video camera but I have no idea if it had anything to do with football. Last night, at practice, an officer did ask me for my ID, which has never happened before. Of course I may just look shifty.

I am now headed to Dallas.

We are going to stop and eat and apparently go to one of the malls before the game.

I hope not too many people stay home to watch it on TV. I'm sure the kids can hear you a lot better if you were at the stadium as opposed to in your living rooms. For those who are coming, safe travels to and from the game for everyone from Gilmer and Wylie.

Let's go get them Buckeyes! One more left to go! Handle your business and DO WORK!

WOW what a lucky bounce for Gilmer!! AW defender LAID THE WOOD on the receiver but Gilmer Offensive Lineman picks it up for the score.

AW doesn't seem to have an answer for Gilmer's passing game

I went to the game and left at the half. It was boring and Wylie just isnt ery good. I have no idea how they got this far. Gilmer isnt great, but they were able to beat an inferior team.

That's a pretty dumb statement... You don't get to the state championship game without being a very good team.

Filmed would do that to anyone!

Oh man, what a game.

Aside from the Gilmer fumble that was returned for the TD, that was probably the best half of football that I have ever seen Gilmer play, and I've only missed a few games since the 2001 season. The execution on offense was near flawless and the defense was a brick wall. Gilmer made a statement in a big way in the win.

To the Gilmer seniors: you guys have been nothing short of amazing. Gilmer went 51-4 during your high school careers which is completely amazing. Overall, Gimer has 4 state championship appearances with 2 state championships and you guys took part in half of each of those. It has been a joy and privledge watching you play the game, learn the game and especially grow as young men over the years. Be proud of what you have accomplished, stay true to your beliefs and continue to work hard and you will go far in life.

I have never been more proud to call myself a Buckeye!

Congraulations men! You earned it!
