Just getting home from the game. Enjoyed reading all these posts from page 1. You Cuero posters were sure you had this one --- at least early on. What a great game. One I will always remember. Cuero was a class act. Too bad someone had to lose. 2 great teams. Gilmer un-characteristically turned the ball over twice on turnovers and Cuero scored TD's on both of them. Just wonder what the score would have been without those turnovers. Gotta give Gilmer credit for winning even allowing Cuero to score 14 points on the turnovers. The Buckeyes have the best second half team I have seen in 3A this years. The coaches have continually made the right adjustments throughout the year (and especially in the Navasota and Cuero games) and the players conditioning and stamina always shows up in the 4th qtr. The Gilmer D came on in the end when we needed a stop. State Championship game next week baby!

Words can not describe how good of a game this was. Just getting in from Gilmer, Im tired, I cant speak, and my toes are gone. Just an amazing game.

The tradition of the two schools just oozed out during pre game with the cuero go mean green shouts, and the buckeye band performing "call out" witht he fans rocking back and forth. I was very very impressed with the cuero fan base and how into it they were the entire game. Was also special to see #22 honored so much by the cuero players and fans.

Thoughts on the game, Cuero was as good as advertised and more on Offense. Jackson is absolutely amazing. Reminded me a lot of Dwight Smith from Carthage last year. I would hate to face him in the years too come. Arndt was very good, very accurate, and just did not make mistakes. And WOW at you guys tight end. Idk his name but he just kept getting open. And talk about some of the catches you guys made. The Cuero Defense played very hard and made some huge plays, great interception early in the game and was able to pounce on the costly Godfrey Fumble in Buckeye Territory. I thought the Cuero D was much better than what the score might of indicated.

For the buckeyes, its just another game in which toughness and grit was displayed by the entire team. Godfrey threw an interception and fumbled inside his own 30 seemingly on the first two possessions of the game I believe resulting in 13 Gobbler points. Paul Chestnut fumbled a punt return in the 2nd quarter after Gilmer for the first time stopped the gobblers. At that point, I thought 3 turnovers vs. this good an opponet would be way too much. However Godfrey and Coach Traylor refused, Coach Traylor made some gutsy calls, and rather you liek the riverboat gambling or not, he coaches to win a game. The onside for Gilmer proved to be huge. The Darian Godfrey TD run that proved to be the game winner was one of the most spectacular plays I have seen as a Gilmer Fan. I just can't express how proud I was of Darian for getting himself out of the early game slump and basically lifting the whole offense on his back in the 2nd half. The Gilmer D made just enough stops to stay in the game, Cuero gave the Gilmer D oppurtunities to put the game away, but somehow Cuero kept finding a way, creating turnovers for a short field, recovering muffed punts, and the fake punt on 4th a 10 late was huge as well. But when it came down to 1:22 left, the Gilmer D facing a Cuero O they hadn't stopped much all night, the D stepped up 4 plays ina row when we needed it the most, not allowing a yard. THE best defensive stand the buckeyes have ever had.

Nothing but respect for the Cuero Gobblers on a great season.

I know I wasn't there, but I'm going to ask this anyway. Is it possible that Cuero defense had something to do with the "uncharactistic" TO's? Maybe the Cuero defense should get some of that credit. Sounds like they earned it!

The fact is that the "# 1 team all year for a reason" team came close to going home and staying there. I had heard a few days before the game that Gilmer was "every bit as good as 2007". Congratulations on the win! Gobblers - great season and thanks as always for letting me on your bandwagon.

fumbling the ball is a part of the game just as much as catching a ball is... that is all ha

Congrats Gilmer!

you think if Tristan was was returing punts the punt return fumble would have happened. NO and we would prolly scored at 7 to us take 7 from them. we ahead by 2 tds. Ok take away the 7 we got on their turnover give them 7 we still ahead by 1 td

take away the interception and fumble we up by 3 tds

Congrats Gilmer! don't disagee one bit. my point was sometimes they are caused sometimes they are all on you. fans can talk about "ifs" all they want. fact is cuero got 3 first half turnovers and that is part of the game. IF we had not turned the ball over we MIGHT have won by more.................but we DID turn the ball over and we won 42-36. i'm not much into ifs, i'm more into reality.

Come on Panther Mom....be gracious. Gilmer earned the win. They deserve the Downlow's support. They would have supported Cuero the rest of the way. ;)

Oh, sorry! I didn't realize that when he dropped the punt, that he told the Cuero dude it was now his to recover.

No hating from me! And I wasn't aware that 2009 Gilmer being every bit as good as 2007 Gilmer was an insult. There were some darn good players on that team! I guess if I were from some other town, then it might be considered a compliment....or not.

And thanks for giving me permission to root for who I want. I've been a Cuero fan for years, and don't expect that to change in the future. Congrats on your win - it sounded like a heck of a game and one I would love to have seen!

Now I'll run along and find some crochet thread to post on.

I do not know why LostAussie got so upset with the quote. Maybe he needed a good night's sleep.

As far as the TOs and the Cuero defense, from my point of view, as usual both teams contributed. The interception I give total credit to the Gobbler defender. On the other 2 TOs, Gilmer mental errors set up opportunities that the Cuero defense took advantage of.

On the first fumble, Stump had been looking right, did not see the blocking to his left, and spun right into his man and the Gobbler. The ball popped free, and the Cuero player immediately pounced on it even before Stump knew where it was. Advantage Cuero.

On the punt, the kid fielding the return maybe thought he was playing infielder for a moment (that's his spring job.) He made a sliding attempt at fielding the punt, could not control the ball, and Cuero closed in to cover the loose pigskin before a Buckeye could get near.

Navasota and Jasper will tell you that it is uncharacteristic for Gilmer to make any turnovers. Stump had only 5 interceptions all year before last night. Those three turnovers in one quarter were more that we had experienced in two games all year long.

I am not trying for sour grapes. I am just reporting what I saw and responding to what I read.

Stump has not forgotten the impression LH made on him in 2007, LHPanther Mom. We know y'all gave us a lesson in championship football.

This is Stump's last season for a chance at winning a state championship, and he wants to make it good. He usually prefers to throw the ball than run, but Cuero was doing a great job of taking his receivers away. As a result, he took what they left for him, an open field in which to run.

Not only did the defense pounce on Gilmer miscues, Cuero took advantage of every short field they got and turned them into points.

But I also credit the Gilmer players for not panicking when they fell behind. They adjusted at the half as did Cuero. Neither team could continue in the third quarter what they had done in the second.

Personally, I am still emotionally exhausted from last night. I will take me a few days to get ready for Saturday. (I wish it were daytime.)

But Wylie will be ready for us, and we them. It will be a great game.

I certainly expect it to be a great game again, this week! The folks behind us in 2007 were getting score updates of the AW/Gilmer game and it sounded like a nailbiter. Best of luck to both - and prayers for no injuries.

I want to give 2 shout outs from this game. The first goes to the Cuero Gobblers and their fans. You have a great football team with tremendous fan support. It was a pleasure to watch your young men play as well as a pleasure to meet some of you. Really classy both on the field and in the stands. The second goes out to the officiating crew and I belive they are from the Houston Chapter. This was the best called game I have seen all year and the crew chief really knew how to control a game. I wish all crews performed this well. They let the teams play but were fair.
