We wish the Cuero Gobblers the best of luck as they prepare to represent Region 4 vs. Gilmer tonight in the Division I semi-finals.

Gilmer is a formidable foe and they have been ranked #1 all season for a reason. There is little doubt the Buckeyes have had a state championship in their sights since the beginning of the season and they are the odds on favorite to host the trophy when it’s all said and done.

As for Cuero, they were supposed to be “down” this year. They lost most of their lineman, strength of recent teams, and almost their entire defense. And right before practices started in August they suffered another loss.

Cuero has always done it the right way. Their kids play hard, work hard and are well coached. It’s as if there is something in the water in this small Texas town that produces kids who just understand how to be a football player. They know what it takes to win. The will to win is great, but it’s nothing without the will to prepare. In Cuero they know how to prepare.

This year’s team has taken that will to prepare to new heights. We’ve seen them play quite a few times. When they score they don’t celebrate much, and when they error they don’t pout or hang their heads. It’s as if they have an unbending focus to use every minute of their time together on the field to be the absolute best they can be. The Gobblers have always been focused, but this year they’ve taken it to a new level, and we think we know why. All year we’ve written about Cuero and all year we’ve avoided saying anything about Cole. He’s just not ours to talk about; his memory belongs to his family, the people of Cuero, and the kids that wear green and white. But we have little doubt that his memory drives these Gobblers to do the absolute best they can. We are very proud of this year’s Cuero team and they are a great representative of our region. They’ve had to deal with unimaginable heartbreak and they’ve done it with dignity and by honoring the game their lost friend loved so much. No matter the outcome tonight we know they’ll compete with all they have and play the game as it should be played. We wish them well.

GO MEAN GREEN!!!
