I only know this from a distance, but South Park ISD was in Beaumont proper also. At the time of merger it had South Park HS and Hebert HS, both 4a. Hebert was a football and basketball power.

The merger as I understood it was driven by intergration. As I understood it, they merger Hebert with Forest Park (already a 5a if I remember correctly). The first year of West Brook's existence they bolted to a state championship with the Hebert coach and mostly Hebert athletes.

South Park was combined with the other Beaumont ISD schools to form Beaumont Central. Then later they opened Ozen at the old Hebert campus.

I may be cloudy on some of the details, but this is generally what happened. If there are any Beaumont folks on here they can correct any mis-statements.

Generally, that is correct. However, it is really just the case that Beaumont had two school districts in it. South Park ISD had as its high schools, South Park High, Forest Park and Hebert High. Beaumont ISD had as its high schools Beaumont High, Charlton Pollard High and French High.

Under voluntary intergration, BISD merged Beaumont High and Charlton Pollard to create Beaumont-Charlton Pollard High. In 1981, under court ordered intergration, South Park ISD merged Forest Park and Hebert High School to create West Brook. As part of a consolidation in 1986 (not sure of the reason but I thought it had more to do with economics rather than intergration), the South Park ISD dissolved.

In conjunction with the dissolution, South Park High was closed and students were transferred to West Brook. Also, B-CP and French merged to create Beaumont Central High.

I had a great post over on a now unmentionable site explaining it all but it's gone now.

From what I recall off the top of my head, Beaumont originally had three school districts: South Park on the south side, Beaumont ISD centrally and French on the north side.

The first high schools competing in the UIL from Beaumont were South Park and Beaumont High.

Beaumont French fielded their first varsity team in 1926

French ISD merged with Beaumont ISD in the late 1940's

South Park had a segregated all-black school Hebert and Beaumont ISD had a segregated all-black school Charlton-Pollard, both of which competed in the PVIL starting in 1940 through desegregation when they both joined the UIL in 1967.

South Park ISD opened Forest Park high school in 1962.

In 1975 Beaumont High merged with Charlton-Pollard to form Beaumont-Charlton-Pollard (BCP)

In 1982 Forest Park merged with Hebert to form West Brook

In 1984 South Park ISD merged with Beaumont ISD and ceased to exist.

South Park High School went on for two more years before merging with West Brook in 1986

BCP merged with French in 1986 to form the current Beaumont Central

In 1998 Beaumont Ozen opened which took students from both the Central and West Brook catchment areas

Varsity UIL Football Programs in Beaumont:
1912-1925 Beaumont High and South Park
1926-1961 Beaumont High, South Park and French
1962-1966 Beaumont High, South Park, French and Forest Park
1967-1974 Beaumont High, South Park, French, Forest Park, Hebert and Charlton-Pollard
1975-1981 Beaumont-Charlton-Pollard, South Park, French, Forest Park and Hebert
1982-1985 Beaumont-Charlton-Pollard, South Park, French and West Brook
1986-1997 West Brook and Central
1998-present West Brook, Central and Ozen

Wasn't it more a matter of Beaumont ISD was financially insolvent and merged with SPISD and SPISD just took BISD's name?

When South Park High closed how big of an uproar did it cause? Seems like South Park alumns are a fiesty group

Estacado should be listed as winning in their first year eligible. In 1967 they only fielded a JV team as the school had no seniors and they weren't allowed to compete in district play and thus weren't eligible for the playoffs.

I agree... South Park merging with West Brook in '86 was sad but there wasn't a public uproar as there was with Forest Park and Hebert.

Why the uproar over Forest Park and Herbert? One schools was white the other black?

Not at all...

It was mostly because Hebert had one of the winningest programs in the state up to that point and Forest Park pretty much was a dud footballwise qualifying for the playoffs one time only in 1963 and going one and out.

Click Here --->Forest Park Football History (http://texashsfootball.com/board/thsfpedia/index.php/Beaumont_Forest_Park)

According to family and friends who were there (I was only 12 at the time) the uproar was more about Hebert's football tradition being sullied rather than being a race issue.

The Hebert coach from 1975-1981 was Alex Durley (after whom Durley Stadium in Beaumont is named) and he continued as the head coach at the brand new West Brook, winning a 5A State Championship the very 1st year of the merger in 1982.

Hebert's all-time winning percentage (80.99%) competing in the UIL is higher than any current team's statewide (WO-S holds the #1 spot currently among active teams)
