They're 0-3 in State Finals games losing to Groesbeck in '91, Everman in '02 and Gainesville in '03

They had the dubious honor of winning three tie games in a row in the 1991 playoffs:

Regional: won the tiebreak over Vernon 20-20
Quarters: won the tiebreak over Marble Falls 14-14
Semis: won the tiebreak over Southlake Carroll 7-7

I know the Southlake Carroll fans old enough to remember still curse and wince when the name Burnet is brought up. I believe that little streak had a lot to do with the UIL implementing the overtime system we have in place today.

I was at the state championship game the next year between Burnet and Gainesville...the entire Everman team, along with Corey Fulbright, were there to greet the Burnet players at the beginning of the game....it brought me to tears!!!

Didn't Burnet and Marble Falls tie during the regular season this same year?

Nope... Marble Falls and Burnet were in the same district but Burnet won the first game outright.

Burnet was 12-0-3 going into the State Finals against Groesbeck

That '91 team was pretty special to the community because prior to that team in 70 years of playing football Burnet had never even won a bi-district game. That team altered the attitude of future players and also showed all us old timers how valuable speed is!

That is right, Burnet beat Marble in the regular season then met up in the quarterfinals in front of a HUGE crowd. Game was played in Leander and ended in a 14-14 tie. Burnet won three weeks in a row on penetrations against Vernon, Marble Falls, and Southlake

Actually, Burnet and Vernon were tied on penetrations as well and had to go to first downs to decide who moved on the the next level.

On a side note, SLC suited up over 60 players for the semis game while Burnet suited up 27 kids.

Another oddity about Burnet's inclination to tie came first in a 1962 Bi-District game against defending state 1A champ Albany. That game was tied at 28 each AND tied on penetrations also. Albany advanced on a 20-16 first down margin.

In 1985 I played for Ed Abernathy at Rockdale. HE was the Oline coach. I remember him never making us push a sled. He used to tell us you need to know how to block and who to block on Friday, not how to push a sled.

We were 8-2 that year loosing to a John Randle led Hearne and a Toby York Yoeman team......

Coach Ed moved on later to lead Burnet to several playoff runs.......
