How do you personally define what makes someone the greatest athelte in their sport? I've listed a few options in the poll but I've also left the last option as other. I hope everyone who votes will expand on their answer in a post.

I forgot to post the poll. Just answer the question:doh:

This really isnt an answer, but it's my all time fovorite quote concerning greatness.

"In my stars I am above thee; but be not afraid of greatness: some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon them."
William Shakespeare

What makes one the greatest athlete in their sport?

I think that "greatest athlete in their sport" pretty much defines what it should mean...

It's hard to pick ONE... that's why most result to "one of the greatest" of all time etc...

I think changing the sport in your image can be a major factor...but the problem is, multiple people do that. AKA Dr. J and Michael Jordan both did. Johnny Unitas and a whole list of other people changed football. Babe Ruth and maybe Mark McGwire (ushering in Steroids definitely changed the game, im not by any means saying McGwire is better than Ruth). As you can see, usually changing the game makes you one of the greats.

Roy Williams helped change the game via the horse-collar rule but he's not one of the greats...

Greatness, like art, is in the eye of the beholder.....or the beer-holder, whichever your preference.

It is an abstract concept that we all know exists, but we can't find a definition that satisfies everyone, because everyone has a different opinion.

It should suffice to say that only I can define what greatness means for me.....and I must leave you to your own definition.

Greatness, in my opinion, is a player with immense talent and who is smart and a tough leader. It also requires hard work, a good attitude, and the ability to get the job done no matter the circumstances.

What defines greatness in general?

Playing the best you can with grace and humility.

It has NOTHING to do with winning or losing IMO

Greatness as an athlete - just go find a list of all-state MVPs.

Greatness as a team - 83 Dangerfld
