ARLINGTON – The Allen-Southlake Carroll game Saturday night certainly lived up to its billing. And then some.

Carroll appeared to have the Class 5A Division II Region I area playoff game wrapped up in regulation before a botched punt in the final seconds allowed Allen to send the game into overtime.

The double-overtime thriller wasn't decided until Sunday morning, when Allen decided to go for the win with a two-point conversion attempt. Carroll stopped Allen quarterback Matt Brown short of the end zone to win 35-34 before a crowd of about 40,000 at Cowboys Stadium.

Carroll (11-1) advances to the regional semifinals and will face Arlington Bowie (9-2) at 7:30 p.m. Friday at SMU's Ford Stadium.

After Brown pulled Allen to within 35-34 in the second overtime on a 2-yard run, both teams traded timeouts. Allen (10-2), last year's 5A Division I state champion, came out and gambled. Brown kept the snap and ran to his left before doubling back to the right side, where Carroll cornerback Justin Agnew stopped him at the 3-yard line.

Carroll led, 21-14, in regulation and stopped Allen on fourth-and-goal from the 5 with 1:33 to play. But the Dragons couldn't run out the clock and had to punt in the final seconds.

On fourth down from the 11, Carroll's snap to the punter was high and bobbled. The punt appeared to be partially blocked and only went 16 yards.

Instead of allowing the final seconds to run off the clock, Carroll downed the ball prematurely with one second left.

That gave Brown one chance from the Carroll 27. Brown heaved the ball to the right side of the end zone, where receiver Chase Gambill beat man coverage by outjumping Carroll's Ross Christensen for the ball to tie the score in dramatic fashion.

Allen drove inside Carroll's 30-yard line on all nine of its drives in regulation but only came away with three touchdowns.

Carroll took a 21-14 lead with 6:41 left in the game when the Dragons went for it on fourth-and-1 from the Allen 13. Running back Tommy Avers hit the hole up the middle and scored untouched.

Allen had tied the score at 14 with 10:10 left in the fourth quarter on running back Kyree Owens' 6-yard run up the middle that capped a 71-yard drive.

But in the end, Carroll saved its mishap in regulation with a clutch tackle as the Dragons erupted in celebration along the sideline.
