The years that Texas has been selected by at least one poll or group are as follows: 1914, 1918, 1941, 1946, 1947, 1949, 1961, 1963, 1968, 1969, 1970, 1977, 1981, 2005. That is 14 times. We could pull a USC and claim them all but that wouldn't fool anyone.
The link below is from the CFBDW (College Football Data Warehouse) and they have compilied this data. However they pick the main national championships by the main recognized polls and award who they feel is the National Champions which very much agrees with the final main polls.
Actually UT only claims 4 which are 1963, 1969, 1970, and 2005. UT claims it in 1970 because even though they lost the bowl game it was awarded to them by the United Press based on the regular season. The other three are obvious why they claim them.

What is interesting is the the CFBDW reconizes the Aggies as their 1939 NC but USC claims it by being awarded it by another poll which ceased to exist soon.
But what is strange is that the Aggies don't claim 1919 because the CFBDW recognizes them as one of three NCs that year.

Also some of the groups had more than one NC because there were not many bowl games at the time and of course no playoffs.

A correction on a couple of years for my careless errors. !946 and 1949 must be replaced by 1950 and 2008. In 2008 Texas did get the No. 1 NC from the GBD College Football Rankings.

Therefore the 14 years as corrected are as follows:

1914, 1918, 1941, 1947, 1950, 1961, 1963, 1968, 1969, 1970, 1977, 1981, 2005, and 2008.

Its ridiculous that USC claims all those championships. If just 1 poll said they are #1, they think they are the NC. only 2 voted for em that year. the 30 others voted for A&M and 2 others voted for someone else.

Maybe 3aDownlow should make their own poll that puts all the texas teams on top. hmmm.....

Why the heck not? The Downlow is certainly as credible as some of the mainstream media and we certainly don't have an east coast bias!:D

Our opinion would certainly be as good as some of them. I don't know how we could get recognized though.
As I have pointed out the BCS is better than it used to be because they try to get the top two teams at the end of the year. But there is often much good debate that they get it right such as one year Oklahoma made it after getting whipped by Kansas State in the Big 12 Championship game 35 to 7.
But before then it was rare that we ever had No. 1 vs No. 2. It happened once in a while during regular seasons and once in a while during bowl games but not often enough. In 1983 because of bowl committments we didn't have the dream game of Texas vs Nebraska which would have been a classic.
In 1963 we got a rare treat when No. 1 met No. 2 three times - twice during the regular season and the Cotton Bowl. The first time was when No. 1 USC faced No. 2 Oklahoma. USC was the defending NC but Oklahoma beat them 17 - 12. Then Texas at No. 2 beat Oklahoma at No. 1 28 to 7. Then in the Cotton Bowl No. 1 Texas beat No. 2 Navy 28 to 6.

There was another one that had voted the Aggies as MCs in the 20s (I think) so they could claim 3 if my count is correct. Maybe more.

Here is another interesting analysis. What is amusing is that by this analysis Princeton could claim more (28) than all the rest including Notre Dame and USC who would probably claim more if their local Kiwanis Club voted them No. 1. :)

In case the link that I gave you above doesn't work you can find it by going to search and type in NCAA Division 1 National Football Championship.
