Before the ball was snapped the announcers were already trying to defend the decision saying that because their defense was tired and having trouble stopping the Colts that Belichek was making the right decision. Once they didn't make it, they quickly shifted gears to "What in the world was he thinking?"
Point blank, no matter how good or bad your D is playing, you can't go for it from your own 30 yard line with 2:00 min left in the game when you are up by 6.

Punt the ball away and make them drive the length of the field for a touchdown with only one timeout!!!
