Mathis vs. Devine

This is going to be a good game but Devine loss there last game against Crystal City which finish the season 2-8, then had a bye week. I think Mathis should win this game. Divine also loss to Cuero in the beginning of the season 33-8 and finish the season with a record 7-3 and 3rd place in district. Any thoughts? By the way #11 Donnie Butler had 11 carries for 301 yrds and 4 tds against Lyford.

Butler had a ridiculous game against Lyford. The Fal game was the first time I'd had a chance to see a Mathis game this season on account of me going to Beeville games, but wow, I could tell he was a special kid. Lyford did well to try to disrupt the timing of the Mathis offense, but whenever Butler got past the line and got into a one on one matchup, he took it to the house.

And he's only a Junior. :D

I am seriously considering making the trip to this game. I have a several friends that I grew up with in Mathis who either coach or have kids on the team.

I'm glad the new AD has been successful and that Mathis has some talent.

Say what? Devine played CC in WK 4 and won something like 30-6.
Your way off. I believe they finished against Carrizo Springs and Lytle and had blow out victories in each game. Where are you getting your info?

That being said, the Pirates are playing better every week. They are going into this game with the intentions of just doing their best. That attitude has worked so far. They know what they are up against, and are preparing for it as they have for every other game. I don't know much about the Warhorses, but I do know the Pirates, and I have no reason to think that they can't pull out another victory. They have already exceeded all expectations. The Warhorses got the night off last friday and spent it in Pirate Stadium with their coaches. I'm sure they got an eyefull, and either left more confident or more concerned. Go Pirates!!

Devine was idle in week 5 and finished with 3 wins including a playoff clincher vs. Hondo.

cuerogobblers, you need to do your reserch on games before you comment, Devine did not lose to Chrystal. Devine is tough and will run all over mathis.

Can you imagine Butler and Washington on turf with their kind of speed? :eek: The line will need to really carry out their blocks to get those two into space against the defense.

Dude, take a chill pill!!!! I might have look at last years game but he does it matter!!! These are just stats and records what will matter is when they think they have Butler or Washington for a tackle and there both gone!!! Those two kids are FAST and the rest of the Mathis team is not that far behind.

Devine and Mathis both obviously have two very good running backs. These teams are both a power running teams. Having said that it will come down to which team wins the battle up front. I know what Devine has to offer and they will run at you all night and execute their offense very well. They never give up and will keep plugging. I have seen Mathis and I know they are tough as well but have a little jolt of speed to throw into that power run game. I think the game will be in the mid twenties and one team will win it up front and take over in the 4th qtr.

Mathis Pirates Brace For Battle With Warhorses

Mathis-- The Mathis Pirates are riding very high right now.

After winning their first district title since 2000, they promptly came out and made a statement in round one of the playoffs, throttling previously unbeaten Lyford 41-24.

It was the Pirates first postseason victory since their run to the state quarterfinals eight years ago. They now have to get ready to face a Devine team that is much like them, tough defensively and boasting a running game that has cranked out more than 3,000 yards this season. Friday's contest at San Antonio's Gustafson Stadium won't be a finesse game by any means.

"It's going to be two teams smashing at each other and it'll probably be over by about 9:15," said first-year Head Coach Paul Kilby. "There won't be a lot of incomplete passes and out of bounds and things like that. It'll probably be a pretty short game."

Linebacker Joe Alvarado has a little more graphic take on what's about to happen.

"Everyone has got to come out and stick," hes said. "Friday is going to be a bloodbath. We've got to be ready for this."

The Pirates are coming off a punishing performance against the Bulldogs. All of their 498 offensive yards came via the ground game, with Donnie Butler and Rashad Washington combining for 5 touchdowns of at least 55 yards. Butler rushed for a career-high 301 yards and four scores.

"We do the same thing we do to the other teams," Butler said. "Run the ball. Keep on running the ball. We don't actually pass unless we need to."

"We're just going to have to work hard because, well, we want it more than everyone else," Washington said. "That's why we're here right now."

The Mathis defense picked off five Lyford passes last week. They probably won't get that many interception opportunities against the Warhorses.

This game may be the closest matchup among all the D29/D31 games this week. Devine and Mathis are both proven programs who are playing well. Lots of rushing power and talent on both sidelines.

This one will probably be determined like every other close game- turnovers and penalties.

A good close game. Congratulations to Mathis for a great season.

One point losses are tough. Sinton might have lost if Pearsall had made one of their two point conversion attemps. If my view and memory is correct they came close. One was when the back got just inside the one and couldn't stretch far enough and the other was close but he got hit about a half yard from it and was push back on a great tackle.
