WALLER — A shootout between Sweeny and La Grange in the first 24 minutes of play at Waller ISD Stadium turned into a Leopard rout, 48-27, in the Class 3A Division II bi-district round.

The score was the first of two hard losses the Sweeny Bulldog nation suffered Friday night. The other was the sudden retirement of Sweeny athletics director and head football coach Tommy Zajicek right after the game.

“My superintendent knew,” Zajicek said. “I’ve been doing this for a long time, 15 years here in Sweeny, 10 the first time and five the second time. There comes a point in time when you know it is time. All I want to be is a good husband and a good grandfather. I am going to carry out my contract through the end of the year, and it was just time.”

Zajicek went 35-18 in his second stint with the Bulldogs and won district titles in 2006, 2008 and this season. He took them to the playoffs in four of those five seasons, with 2007 the only year the Bulldogs missed out.

On the field Friday night, both offenses experience plenty of success as well. Sweeny and la Grange combined to score points on eight of the first nine drives on the night as the Leopards took a 30-27 halftime lead.

The second half was a completely different story for Sweeny. In the third period, the Bulldogs managed only 41 yards and a single first down.

La Grange (9-2) scored once in the third quarter to take a nine-point lead into the final 12 mintues. But it was the Leopard defense that put the clamps on Bulldog quarterback Tre’ Lemon and running back Jamell Woodard in those final two quarters of play.

Lemon exploded for 119 rushing yards in the first half on 15 carries and two touchdown runs. He also passed for 98 yards on seven completions and another touchdown.

“We missed some plays in the second half, and if we make those plays, we probably have a half like the first half,” Zajicek said. “But we just kind of got out of sync and we could never get into it.”

In its five second-half drives, Sweeny had two punts, two fumbles and interception.

Division I-bound quarterback Josh Schneider continued to make the throws for La Grange as he connected with Darrell Morris on a 20-yard touchdown to give them that nine-point breather.

For the game, Schneider finished 15-for-26 for 309 passing and three touchdowns.

Sweeny (8-3) kicked off the contest by going 64 yards on nine plays as Lemon capped it with a 21-yard score. After Chris Wilson’s extra point kick, the Bulldogs were up 7-0.

It didn’t take long for Schneider to answer as he connected with junior Brandon Wilkerson on a 38-yard score to knot the game 7-7.

The Bulldogs jumped back on top when Lemon scored from the one, but Wilkerson came right back with his second score. The Leopards then converted on a two-point conversion, with Jacob Henderson hauling in a pass from Jacob Garlick to give them their first lead of the game, 15-14.

After the Leopard kicker shanked the kickoff, the Bulldogs started their next drive at the La Grange 44 and quickly found the end zone again. Woodard punched the ball in from three yards out, but the Bulldogs failed on the two-point conversion try and led, 20-15.

Sweeny took its last lead with 3:25 before the half when Lemon found Corey Bass in the end zone, 27-23.

“Tre’ made a lot of plays with his feet and he kept making things happen and we were doing a good job moving the ball,” Zajicek said. “We had some injuries in the second half that had some people out of the ball game and that didn’t help us any in the second half.”

La Grange moves on to face either Luling or Edna in the next round.
