Region I-3A volleyball: Wylie plays in first tourney

With a sweep of Lubbock Cooper in a regional quarterfinals match Tuesday, the Wylie volleyball team became one of just 16 Class 3A teams still playing for a chance at a state championship.

If the Lady Bulldogs (36-7) want to be one of the final four teams standing, however, they’ll have to survive their first regional tournament appearance, which begins a 6:30 tonight against Liberty Hill at Levelland High School.

By earning its first district title and advancing this far in the playoffs, Wylie already has secured the best season in the program’s short two-year history. But coach LeAnn Thomsen said she and her team view this weekend’s Region I-3A tournament not as a destination but as another step toward their ultimate goal — the state tournament in San Marcos.

“Up until now we’ve had a great season, but when I ask them “Are we finished yet?’ Their answer is always, ‘No,’” Thomsen said. “Obviously our goal is to the be the 3A state champs or we wouldn’t be in this. We wouldn’t work as hard as we do.

“But we also know that it’s one step at a time.”

The first step toward that ultimate goal pits the Lady Bulldogs against the District 8-3A champion Liberty Hill Lady Panthers (24-13). Led by middle blocker Jackie Wattles and outside hitters Shelby Stoss and Whitni Lueck, the Lady Panthers enter tonight’s match coming off playoff wins over Iowa Park and Llano.

“It’s kind of the same scenario as it was on Tuesday, their team is a lot like ours,” Thomsen said. “They have a really good middle hitter and two good outsides. They primarily use three hitters quite a bit, and they have a pretty solid defense.”

If the Lady Bulldogs can get past Liberty Hill, they will play the winner of Monahans vs. Burnet on Saturday. Should Monahans (38-5) beat Burnet, the Region I-3A final could be a rematch of a Sept. 13 match between Monahans and Wylie that the Lady Loboes won in five games.

Thomsen said she’s not looking past Liberty Hill by any means but her team has would love an opportunity to even things with regional powerhouse Monahans.

“I know our girls haven’t forgotten that,” said Thomsen, whose team has won 17 straight matches since losing to Monahans. “I’m not going to have to say anything before that match. They’ve been hungry for that rematch all year.”

Thomsen said she believes her team has the talent and focus to be Region I’s representative at the state meet if they can play to their capability. And she doesn’t expect the team’s only perceived weakness, a lack of regional tournament experience, to hurt them.

“I really don’t think so. They all have a pretty level head, and they know what they have to do,” she said. “They know their jobs and it just seems like they’re focused.

“The way that this team has played all year, that’s exactly what we’re going to expect. We’re going to expect for them to come out focused. I think the girls are going to expect to win, and it’s going to be just the next step.”

I'll admit it. I'm lost when it comes to soccer, volleyball, and to some extent basketball. But I love watching 'em all...
