Lyford visits Mathis on Friday the 13th. Which team moves on to face Devine?

According to the Massey Ratings Mathis is favored in this one. But from the looks of it, this is a pretty even match-up. Can Lyford keep up with all the running threats out of the Pirate backfield? Can the Pirates ground the Bulldogs' air assault?

I was pretty impressed by Mathis on Friday. Sure, they were up against a pretty bad Fal team, but the team was very fired up the entire game and played lights out. If the QB-Center exchange can be cleaned up, I imagine Mathis will have a good shot at knocking off Lyford.

i agree mathis is playing great at the right time of the year but lyford should not be overlooked considering that they still remain undefeated but i still gotta do some research

Hopefully the Ingleside and Sinton games helped prepare Mathis for Lyford.
If Mathis can control the ball on offense they should be fine.:)

Lyford fans feel confident they can stop Mathis running game but i dont think they've face running backs like Mathis. Only thing i'm wondering if Mathis is going to play the defense they've been playing or go with a special defense for Lyford pass happy offense.

I was surprised by Mathis's defensive speed last night. I think their loss to Sinton is may have been the best medicine in prepping for Lyford. Mathis faced three wide open offenses in district play and managed two wins, so they should be prepared for what Lyford will throw at them.

i agree ingleside and sinton were probably the perfect medicine for mathis going into the playoffs.. both of those teams had high caliber offenses and could score at will..i believe that if mathis can play the way they played against these two state ranked teams they should be O.K.

That's quite a prediction considering that Mathis' biggest loss was to Sinton by 5 points. Yes five points, not even one touchdown. Surely you cannot compare anything Lyford has seen this season to Sinton or Ingleside, or even Robstown. I won't make any crazy predictions, but I will say this game will be much more competetive than a three touchdown difference.

i don't think lyford has faced as quick a team as mathis has.. Mathis' offense will wear down Lyford's and running game will start clicking in the 2nd half.

I was at the game on Friday to see Mathis play. I ran into my buddy from high school and he has his older son who is a junior playing on varsity for Mathis. He is # 35 and plays DE and also his younger son just got moved up last week from JV to varsity.Check this out hes only a freshman QB backing up the qb now, his number is #1!!!

As I watching the game Mathis defense is awesome. He was telling me that on D they werent showing nothing against Fal because there were scouts there from Lyford. On offense the same thing, they were just running the same plays over and over. One of the coaches for Mathis has a State championship ring under his belt. I believe its the Defensive coach. That Qb from Lyford will not have time to set his feet and throw because Mathis D is fast coming up the middle with the blitz and not to mention corner blitz. I think that Mathis is going to pressure that QB and make him make mistakes and turn the ball over or just get sack. Mathis is going have to play mistake free ball and execute on offense.

Do not underestimate the Bulldogs.

The QB has happy feet and is a good scrambler. Do not expect very many sacks, and the ones you get will not be easy. WR's are blazin' fast. They can also run the ball if they need to.

Strength = Pass
Weakness = Run

The defense is very very good against the run. If you are going to try and pass . . . forget it. Defense has some speed and are about the perfect size.

Strength = Inside Run/Pass
Weakness = Outside Run

Lyford is tenacious. Do not underestimate them.

I doubt Mathis will underestimating anyone. If anything, I doubt very many people would have predicted a share of the district title prior to preseason, what with the new staff coming in an all. But Coach Kilby has done amazing work and is using his players to their fullest. Can you believe Donnie Butler hardly played offense last year!?!?! Holy cow!

RH's RB's ran all over Ingleside last year (and Robstown and Devine for that matter) . . . and yes, it is the same RB's. This year RH played close with Robstown who played close with Ingleside. Too bad RH took a crap against Ingleside this year.

Well yes I have to say ive seen Zapata vs Rio hondo where Zapata came from behind to win a close one So im more then aware what they have to offer..but those teams do not have the deep threat like the 3 31-3a teams ......and Mathis went blow for blow with all of them and lyford is no different sorry buddy but Mathis by 10

Great game tonight. LYford brought a pass happy attack and used a whole lot of screens to pick their way down the field while launching several balls up for grabs. Four interceptions on the night for Mathis defense and no turnovers for the offense. Lots of penalties on the night on each team thanks to the very aggressive Lyford defense jumping offsides and forcing Mathis into false starts. Standing room only crowd on both sides. I have never seen that many people at a game in Mathis! :eek:
